The fireplace has been a symbol of pleasure and warmth to numerous homes all over the world. Many of the newer homes have the luxury of having electric fireplaces. No wood is required for an electric fireplace and all you have to do is flip a switch to start the fire.

A fireplace is a space that is made to hold a fire. It is actually an opening that is made in the very bottom of a chimney. The opening is then usually framed by a mantel or mantelpiece. The firepit is the open area that is located below the mantel where the fire is burned. This space can sometimes be used for cooking, but now days it is used mostly for heating rooms.

A flue of a chimney is built so that smoke, gas and particulate exhaust can travel to the outside of the building. Since warm air rises, it travels upward, draws the smoke with it to exit the building.

Many fireplaces are made inside of buildings. But there are certain instances when people will make fireplaces outdoors to provide warmth during the evening, to cook outside, or it is erected mainly for decorative purposes.

In various areas of the world where the climate is particularly cold, the fireplace, or hearth, has been the center of the household. It provides warmth to all and helps the occupants of the house survive the long, hard winters. The fireplace is considered to be an enjoyable and cozy place for people to gather because of the warm glow it gives off.

People often have a feeling of pleasure and contentment due to the pleasantly flickers and hypnotizing leaps of a wood fire. Even today, the fireplace is a most delightful feature that protects and warms people from the elements of nature.

People usually gather around a fireplace for a relaxed, nice conversation as well as family bonding. After putting in a hard day at work, the family meets by the fireplace to catch up on the events of the day just before going to bed.

When a fireplace is designed, the general focus is usually of the fireplace mantel. Traditionally, a mantel offers the chance for the designer or the architect to make a statement about the room being created. In times past, the mantel reflected the architectural design of the inside of the house whether it was classic, French, American, traditional, Renaissance, Italian or Victorian.

It seems that the fireplace is also a feature in literature. Fireplaces have always been related to the idea of reading. They have been deeply etched in children's books, Christmas songs, and stories like Alice in Wonderland and the Three Little Pigs.

An interesting addition to your fireplace would be a coal carrier. This entails having a good supply of wood, a set of fireplace tools and an old-fashioned coal carrier. This would be essential for a fireplace setting.

Another thing you should consider having are fireplace doors. They provide an easy solution for keeping fire where it belongs - in the fireplace - and also they will protect your family, home and furniture from popping coals.

Whether you are considering building a home with a fireplace or you already have one, you will find there are many ways of decorating it so that it will become the center of attention in your home.

House siding comes in many styles and types including vinyl, aluminum, wood, stucco, seamless steel, brick, and engineered wood. Each material has its individual pros and cons to consider in terms of new home installation, residing an existing structure, and insulation and protection against the elements. It is more than just a great way to modernize the exterior of your home. It is a way to add years of protection to your exterior structure.

It goes without saying that siding your home is a great way of enhancing your home's visual charm. Siding also adds fortification against the elements - wind, rain, snow, and ice. It is essentially a barrier applied to the outside of your home to make it weatherproof.

Siding helps prevent moisture from seeping in, protects the interior structure against unwanted pests, thwarts the growth of common biological contaminants like mold, bacteria and dust mites, thereby lessening allergic, respiratory and other health issues.

We all know that siding comes in vinyl. Vinyl siding has been around for years. However, siding is made in lots of different materials, and comes in a multitude of colors, textures and gauge thicknesses. It can imitate architectural details that were once made only from wood products.

Using vinyl siding can help reduce home maintenance bills, and protect your home from wear and tear. The material that covers the outside walls of your house is important to your home's makeup, facade, and weather worthiness. Many companies consider vinyl siding so tough that they offer a lifetime warranty.

One of the biggest detractors from using vinyl siding is in its insulation value. Vinyl siding offers little in the way of insulation-value for your home, so if you choose go this route, make sure that your home has an adequate amount of insulation prior to installation.

Wood siding is also available to install on your house in three forms: boards, shingles, or shakes. It comes in Cedar siding, Masonite siding, and log and pine siding. Woods such as cedar, redwood and cypress are most often used as siding.

Cedar Siding is available in smooth, rough or saw-textured surfaces and is very durable. Cedar is known for its grain qualities and rot resistance. It also takes a stain well adding a rich character to your facade.

Whether you go with vinyl or wood, house siding is an excellent investment for your home. It is a terrific way to update your home's look while increasing your resale value. If you want to move away from painting, house siding is an excellent alternative that can provide years of beautification to your home exterior.

Landscaping can be an enjoyable activity. Make sure you consider your landscaping choices, your house's orientation on the lot and the size of your space. You will need some creative ideas and some passion for what you are trying to accomplish.

1...It is recommended that you use the view of the sky or big trees as the background for the scene you are trying to create, to frame your house. Essentially, you are creating a living landscape, much like artists do on their canvases. The tall trees are generally placed in the back garden and the shorter ones in front of the house, providing a beautiful, changing background on your living canvas.

2...Too much of the foundations staring out at the neighborhood can create an unappealing view of the house from the front. You can fix this with a careful selection of shrubbery of varying heights and shades of green. Adding some bright flowers can go a long way to beautifying the front of your house.

3...When planting trees, wherever you do it in your garden, leave some walking space of about three to four feet from the trees.

4...Place taller shrubs between the windows and remember to colour coordinate them and to vary the leaf textures to make an attractive picture.

5...Examine your garden, and, if you see nothing but straight lines and right angles,
soften these lines with vines or small trees grown in large containers in the corners or edges of your garden.

6...One nice addition to your new landscape is a vegetable garden. This will not only greatly enhance your family's meals, but increase your enjoyment and exercise when you plant, water and harvest the "fruits of your labour" Pick a spot out of the way of the usual traffic in your garden and where there is lots of sunlight.

7...Planting tall trees around the perimeter of your garden will focus attention on your house and soften the vertical lines. Adding smaller trees and shrubs as needed on the remaining parts of your landscape, working your way forward, presents a pleasing appearance from the street and the illusion of depth. One technique is to use plants with darker leaves in the background and plants with variegated leaves or brightly coloured flowers in the foreground.

8...When planning your living landscape, be sure to leave space for parking or for your children's play area. Vines on trellises and small shrubs can be options to cover the areas or direct attention somewhere else. Do not forget brightly coloured flowers in beds or pots, which gives a sparkling, friendly appearance to the outside your home.

9...Cover the things that are not pleasing to the eye, like clotheslines and
dustbins. Trellises and fences can be attractively concealed when vines cover them. For added beauty, take a look at flowering vines.

10...There are plants that grow faster than others and some that require less attention. A check with your local garden centre will help you make the right choices. Beginners are advised to start with plants that do not require major attention and tending in order to grow adequately.

Landscaping can be enjoyable if it is approached as a family activity and not as a "major dirt moving and backbreaking experience" Your garden is your living canvas. Creativity and passion is all that's needed to make it a masterpiece.

With the daily buzz surrounding both global weather problems and the need for cheaper and better energy to heat and cool our homes, simple landscaping solutions can make your life easier.

Trying to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer have been primary concerns and, in many cases, budget disasters, for average families everywhere. Several natural disasters throughout the world have forced everyone to deal with higher energy costs - every day, natural gas and oil prices seem to spiral upward and there doesn`t seem to be any relief in sight.

When beauty meets function, your landscaping can conserve energy in your home while providing wonderful views for your enjoyment. By effectively arranging your landscape to meet specific energy needs, you could save up to 30 per cent on the cost of your heating bills. Conversely, in the summer time, who wants a hot stuffy house with a fan constantly whirring away or, worse still, an even more `expensive to run` air conditioning system?

Using landscaping to conserve energy involves three separate but related considerations

1. The wind`s movement has to be focused in order to manage the effects of it blowing through your house

2. The sun`s heat needs to be redirected effectively throughout your property

3. Your inside temperature, whether warm or cool, needs to be maintained

Believe it or not, you do not have to become Mother Nature to accomplish this result. Simple changes and additions to your garden can accomplish miracles by reducing your energy costs dramatically and, of course, the `knock on` effect on our environment.

Redirecting The Wind

One of the primary contributors to lowering home temperatures is the wind that blows at your house. Even if you have all your windows tightly closed, the frigid winter wind cools your walls and foundations and reduces your inside temperature.

This winter wind often carries a much colder blast than the actual static outside temperatures. Your heating bills will reflect this `wind driven` assault.

You can ease some of this money drain by planting effective windbreaks that include evergreens or other trees native to your location. In fact, even fences placed in strategic locations can serve as windbreaks and can be decorative year round.

Keeping the Heat In

Shrubs and bushes that are planted close to the foundations and walls of the house create what is called a `dead air barrier`. This buffer along the foundation of the house helps the warm or cold air inside your house to avoid the natural, equalizing energy transfer that wastes your money.

Redirecting the Sunlight

The summer sun is one of the main culprits of increasing heat inside your home. When the sun`s rays hit your home directly, 90 per cent of this heat goes into heating up your walls and foundations. This directly increases the burden on your fans or air-conditioning system. In order to block the sun during the peak times, you need to locate trees in your garden either west or south of your house.

One of the key considerations in landscaping includes the various weather conditions that prevail in the area. This means taking into consideration where the sun shines and what path the sunlight takes. Pay attention to the sun`s path over your house during the summer and the winter. Go outside frequently and take notes so you can make educated decisions when you start planting.

By putting specific trees near to your house, you are effectively reducing temperatures inside the home in the summer. Huge shade trees in particular can reduce temperatures up to 10 degrees F. In the winter, dense, deciduous trees that shed foliage allow for sunlight to pass through the branches, providing some warmth to your walls, foundations and inside your home.

Now that you understand the three modifications you need to apply to your garden to naturally control your home`s temperature, let`s discuss how to do that.

Making Your Garden Energy Efficient

A pretty landscape can only go so far. As mentioned above, efficient landscaping that takes into consideration energy needs, may well save a family more then 30 per cent of their usual heat or cooling costs, either in the winter or summer.

So how do you make an energy efficient garden? There are various things that can be considered in both existing and `soon to be developed` landscapes.

One of the primary culprits in the wasting of energy is the warm or cool inside air that escapes through the home`s roof, windows and doors. In order to keep your heated or cool air inside the home, the obvious answer is to add some insulation to block this escape. Adding insulation, though, will not be the total answer.

You need outside protection all year. The best way to achieve this protection is by planting shrubbery around the home`s foundations. As mentioned above, this creates a `dead air barrier`, keeping the heat and cool inside the home where it matters. Experts suggest that not planting the shrubbery too close to the house`s foundation helps to give an increased area for the `dead air barrier`. How about that for natural insulation?

Landscaping is a `win win` situation. Beautifying your surroundings and reducing your heating and cooling costs will benefit everyone.

The question of whether it makes more sense to buy used chainsaws over new machines is often asked and to be honest, there are a number of scenarios which need to be considered.

Budget is one consideration. If you are working on a limited budget then looking for a used chainsaw may be a wise option. However, if you have the money to spend then buying new is probably a better option.

There is an old saying which goes something like this..."buy used and you inherit somebody else's problems." I guess that statement can be applied right across the shopping board including buying used chainsaws but if you follow some sensible shopping practices then you can avoid the pitfalls.

Let's take a look at how to approach shopping for a used chainsaw:

1. Look in your local newspaper classifieds. There are garage or yard sales happening most weekends and these can often unearth some real gems.

2. Be careful though, finding a chainsaw at these sales is one thing thing but you need to make sure the machine is in good working order. Always try before you buy so ask the owner to give you a quick demo. You at least want to know the thing will start.

3. Farm sales and auctions are another avenue worth exploring. In fact, these can be a better option on most occasions than backyard garage sales.

4. Go to your local chainsaw or farm machinery outlet and let them know you are in the market for a chainsaw. Quite often, a client may be on the verge of trading in their chainsaw for an upgraded model and the service dealer can point you in the right direction.

5. Shopping for a used chainsaw online is as easy as typing in your request in your favorite search engine. Ideally, shopping online for a used chainsaw may not be as good as finding one locally but it's a good back-up if you run out of options. The downside is you will virtually be buying a machine sight unseen and will need to pay shipping charges.

6. Online auctions such as eBay are good alternatives.

7. Online forums can be a gold mine of information. Forums specific to chainsaw or machine tool members provide the opportunity to present your request and if you don't find a used chainsaw for sale among the members, it's more than likely you'll get plenty of referrals and great suggestions of where to look.

There are not just a few ways of propagating (or reproducing) plants, but many. A few of the most popular ways are explained below:

Sowing seeds.

Many houseplants can be reproduced by seeds. Seeds need three basic conditions for germination: moisture, warmth and air. A special seed compost soil can be purchased for this purpose. Most seeds germinate in darkness but a few need light. Look at the flower seed packet to determine which is which.

Plant seeds in small trays. If you plan to grow more than one type of plant, don't plant the different seeds in the same potting tray.

Thin the seedlings once they are well established to prevent crowding, lack of growth and to provide good air circulation.

When the young plants are sturdy and growing strongly, transfer each of them into its own pot.

Dividing plants.

This is the easiest way to propagate plants. It is usually best to divide plants in the spring. When a plant gets too big for the pot that it is currently in, the roots become root-bound or crowded. This prevents the natural growth of the plant and it begins to die.

Here are the steps to take to divide a plant:

1. Remove the entire plant from the pot.

2. Using your fingers, pull the root apart being careful not to tear the root stems. Only cut through a root as a last resort if the root ball won't pull apart.

3. Inspect the center of the root. If it appears old and the roots are woody, discard it.

4. Replant the separated plants, each into its own pot.

Layering

Layering is an easy, though slower, method of propagating many trailing and climbing houseplants that have flexible stemps - like ivy plants.

Long stems from the mother plant are secured with small pieces of wire into pots of potting compost. The stems are not cut from the parent plant until roots have formed from the potted plant shoot.

It's best to layer plants in late spring and early summer while they are growing strongly.

Stem cuttings

Many plants can be reproduced by taking stem cuttings. Here's how:

1. Use a sharp knife to cut a strong and healthy shoot from the mother plant, cutting it just above a leaf joint.

2. Push a dowel into a pot of compost soil and then insert the cut end of the stem 3/4 to 1 inch into the hole. Don't bury any leaves since this will cause rotting.

3. Tap compost around the cutting and lightly water.

4. Cover the plant and pot with a plastic bag to create a greenhouse effect. (Use small dowels to keep the baggie from touching the plant.)

As I mentioned before, these are just a few of the many ways of propagating plants. Other ways include water rooting, whole leaf cuttings, leaf square cuttings and more.

No matter what kind of plant that you have, there is a way to propagate it.

A small deck does not necessarily have to remain a small deck. There are a number of techniques to make that less than large area increase in size and become more comfortable. The key to small deck design is simplicity.

1. Create the illusion of one big area from 2 smaller spaces. If your deck is bordered by the backyard lawn then allow this outdoor living area to spill out into that open space and it will create the illusion of being larger.

2. Create colorful flower or garden beds on 1 or more sides of the deck so that it does not seem to float like an island in the grassed area of your backyard. Instead the multicolored flowers and greenery will work together to seamlessly blend with the deck and become an integral part of the backyard landscape.

3. Emphasize the deck and not the property line. Instead of letting the lawn end at the property line create perimeter planting beds that will turn any attention inward toward the deck. The careful placement of trees, shrubs and plants in these perimeter garden areas will lead the eye back to the deck which should be the focal point of the yard.

4. Use plants with interesting textures in containers on the deck or in flower beds that border the deck. This will focus attention onto the deck and not the surrounding landscape. If there are stairs or steps that link the deck with the yard, use container plants on the sides of the steps to further direct attention toward the deck surface.

5. Concentrate color in a specific area rather than scatter flowers throughout the backyard. Groups of flowers in containers on the deck or in flower beds adjoining the deck create more impact than scattered blooms. If color is used in more than 1 location, repeat 2 or 3 colors to link the areas together.

6. When possible, emphasize views adjacent to the deck. If there is a water feature, a lovely grove of trees or garden area nearby make sure to leave that view open and accessible from the deck. Move or rearrange furniture and other objects on the deck in order to facilitate this.

7. Place any type of screening strategically to enhance privacy and block only those sights that are distracting. Movable screening provides a great deal more flexibility than fixed types in enabling this to occur.

8. Install a water feature or hang wind chimes close to the deck. The soothing sounds that they create will mask other noises that come from the street or neighbouring yards. A trellis or vertical sections of latticework can provide support for dense greenery which is not only attractive to look at but can also filter out sound and prying eyes.

9. Install built-in seating on the outside edges of the deck since it takes up less room than furniture that stands alone. Also use a round table since it takes up less room than rectangular types and allows the seating of additional people for dining or entertaining.

10.Keep decking patterns simple. Small patterns and contrasting textures created a feeling of being hemmed in and add very little to the appeal of the overal deck design.

11.Move furnishings to the side of the deck to open up the central space and create the illusion of size while also allowing for much easier access and traffic flow on and off the deck.

12.Add a patio off the edge of the deck to enlarge the amount of usable space. Link these 2 areas by using:

a) a similar material such as wood, brick or stone in some way

b) by the use of container plants or planter boxes

c) by using a similar color in some way (flower, decorative art piece, etc.)

d) by installing an arbor or pergola to provide shade protection for all or parts of both

Careful use of a variety of simple deck design techniques can enhance the look of any small deck and create the illusion that it is larger than its actual size.

Every homeowner has the constant desire to want to create a presentable environment in their house. It is only natural - if you make such a large investment as a house, you should maintain it to the best of your abilities. Using simple techniques to decorate your house, you can increase the aesthetics by a huge amount. It can be very expensive to hire a professional home decorator, and it is quite frankly unnecessary. Professional home decorators are simply people who have learned to spot certain fundamental truths about home aesthetics. So if you feel the need to decorate or redecorate your home, you should consider all of the following aspects.

The first step to home decorating is having tasteful furniture and accessories. This doesn't mean you have to buy a ridiculously expensive set from a furniture store. You can do with thrift store goods if you're careful. When you first start picking (or replacing) your furniture, you should decide on a certain theme that you want to stick with. You can buy furniture that is mostly made out of wood. If you buy a can of wood stain from your local home improvement store, you can magically match all of your furniture when previously they completely contrasted each other. Alternatively, you may decide to go with a modern theme, or any other number of themes and sub-themes used by decorators. You can get ideas from decorating magazines, stores, or homes of friends.

Once you've got your furniture and accessories all generally matching, you can consider your walls and carpets. Of course, this stage of the decorating depends on how much you want to overhaul your home, and how much you are willing to spend in time and money. The fact of the matter is, your carpet and walls are most likely not the best match for the rest of your house, since the builders of your home could not have known what sort of furniture you would have. Painting the walls is a relatively easy project, and you can do it in a weekend if you plan it out right. A tastefully-colored wall can lend a lot of aesthetic value to your home.

The hardest part of decorating your home is noticing small touches that you can make to lend to and improve the overall mood and theme of the house. The reason it's hard is that you can't analyze any specific aspect of your house and figure out how to change it for the better. Instead, you have to look at the big picture and creatively imagine things that you could be doing differently. If this doesn't come naturally to you, then you can use many different sources as inspiration. But a few magazines next time you're at the store, and look at the rooms pictured within. Most of them have likely been designed by professionals. You can look for the small details that give the room its great style, and figure out ways to apply the same thing to your home. Just make sure that the small details fit the color scheme and style of your overall decor.

The lighting of your rooms is also a very important aspect. When you have a very well-thought-out furniture layout, and specific decorations everywhere, usually the default lighting layout will not suffice. Think about changing the lighting to a different part of the room to change the focus. Think about putting a lamp on a table or even a track lighting system on the ceiling. There are many different options, and if you choose the right one then you can masterfully focus the attention of visitors to the parts of the room that you want them to be looking at.

Home decorating is never easy or quick, which is why so many people are tempted to spend a lot of money for professional advice. But before you do that, find out what exactly you are capable of, and see what you can do for your house.

Although terracotta has been used architecturally for many centuries, it wasn't until a couple of decades ago that people started to use it for household purposes. It's hardly surprising that the benefits of terracotta pots were soon realised as the thickness of them guarantees resistance to weather and ageing and they are plant friendly due to the colour and texture of the material.

Terracotta pots (baked earth) are baked clay that has not been glazed and is also applied to the reddish-brown colour considered most typical of the material. The popularity of terracotta pots has grown over the years due to the fact that the range of pots available continues to improve whilst still maintaining reasonable prices. As well as this, almost any plant looks good in a terracotta pot regardless of whether you are growing it inside, in the greenhouse or out in the garden. You can buy them in a wide range of shapes and sizes and either plain or decorated so you are very likely to find a design that matches your existing decor. If you keep your plants in the garden you can even be rest assured that your terracotta pots are safe in winter because as they are fired at such high temperatures they are frost resistant.

Terracotta pots originate from their use throughout history for sculpture and pottery and bricks and roof shingles. In ancient times, the first clay sculptures were dried (baked) in the sun after being found and were then placed in the ashes of open hearths to harden. Kilns were then used, similar to those that are more traditionally used for pottery today.

Most people think of terracotta pots as something you find in your garden. However, terracotta has been used for many centuries around the world. The most famous terra cotta statues are those of the terra cotta warriors in China and another significant user of terracotta has been Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Terracotta Army of China. American architect Louis Sullivan is well - known for his elaborate glazed terracotta ornamentation which is only possible with terracotta. Terracotta has also been used extensively in the town buildings of Victorian Birmingham, England and pre-colonial West African sculpture also made extensive use of terracotta.

Other reasons why terracotta pots have become so popular include the fact that they are much lighter than other materials and it can be further glazed to produce objects with colour. In fact, they make perfect plant pots because not only are they hard-wearing but they look good as well.

Pellets are made of compressed sawdust. They are about the size of rabbit food pellets and are a good fuel alternative to wood, coal or gas. Before deciding on a pellet stove, be sure that there is a supply available near your home. Most pellet manufacturers are based in the northwest and Rocky Mountain regions, but there are retailers available throughout the nation. You may be able to source suppliers if you live near a heavily wooded area. Wood pellets are available in 40lb bags.

One main advantage of a pellet burning stove is that it does not need a typical chimney. Instead, the few gases can escape through a hole in the wall directly behind the appliance using a Pellet Vent or Class L chimney of stainless steel interior and galvanized or aluminum exterior. If you already have a regular chimney, you can use it, but it must be modified with the addition of a smaller pipe, usually of stainless steel. Pellets are clean and easy to use and, depending on your stove model and heating needs, may only need to be added once a day to keep the stove burning. Pellets are poured into a hopper and are transferred slowly by auger to the fire chamber.

Some models of pellet stoves are built to burn corn as well, or an inferior grade of pellets, something to be considered for a time when pellets may be made from something other than high-grade sawdust. The outside of the stove does get hot, a consideration if you have small children. The stove relies on mechanical air-supply systems to vent air from the home.

Pellet stoves also use fans to assist the air circulation in your home, so if your electricity goes out, you won't be able to use the stove. There are battery packs available on some stoves to circumvent this problem. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development has strict guidelines in place as to where pellet stoves may or may not be installed. For instance, they may not be installed in new manufactured (mobile) homes.

Pellet burning appliances cost upwards of $1,200 or more, but when comparing costs of different fuel stoves, remember to include the complete installed cost of each as well as the fuel and fuel consumption. While some fuels seem more expensive, they last a lot longer or give of much more heat, so this must be taken into consideration too.

Wooden railings are generally the most commonly used type of railing system utilized in deck design. However, there are many other deck railing options.

Some systems use wood posts and rails but replace the balustrade with cables, pipes or glass panels. Alternative systems use metal or plastic materials or combinations of the 2 to replace the wooden components.

Although these optional railing systems may be more expensive in terms of the cost of materials, they may:

1. be installed more quickly than conventional types

2. be less intrusive visually because of the nature of their design

3. be able to match a particular style that would be difficult to reproduce in wood

4. radically decrease the amount of maintenance required

5. completely eliminate the need for maintnenance

Glass Panel Railing Systems:
Tempered glass panels may be used to create virtually invisible railings that can also act as windscreens. These panels are inexpensive and widely available. The actual glass is tempered which makes it strong but uncuttable. As a result the spacing between vertical posts must be done with the glass panel size in mind. The panels may be held in place in 1 of 2 ways. In the first, a series of grooves cut into the posts as well as the top and bottom rails fix the glass panel in place. In the second, the panels are fixed in place by wooden stops applied to both sides around the perimeter of each glass panel. This method permits panels to be removed easily for replacement or repair.

Cable Railing Systems:
This system uses 1/8 inch diameter stainless steel cables with end fittings. It is used for its unobtrusive presence rather than for its looks. Installation of pre-drilled wooden or metal posts is the first step. The cables are then threaded through the holes in the posts and made taught by tightening a nut on a threaded section of each cable strand. Cable installation is a simple process that is completed quickly. Cable systems in stainless steel involve material costs that are more expensive than they would be for wood.

Manufactured Railing Systems:
Premanufactured railing systems are available in composites, plastics and metals. They are quite a bit more expensive than wood systems. Their advantage is that they are mainly maintenance free. Some imitate wood while others create styles that would be difficult to reproduce in wood. Components come in precut pieces and are ready to assemble.

1. PVC Railings - are smooth and maintenance free. They can look like wood from a distance. They do need internal wood or metal reinformcement. Posts can vary from stand alones to sleeves that cover 4x4 pressure treated lumber. Painted, galvanized or aluminum pipe or square tubing with a mounting flange are 2 other types. PVC balusters come in a huge variety of shapes and provide a great deal of choice to a homeowner.

2. Metal Railings - are available that can be mounted tp regular or factory made posts. They are generally made from aluminum and come with a durable factory baked on finish. Their higher strength capablilities enables them to have smaller sizes which interfere less with spectacular views from a deck.

3. Resin Composite Railings - contain recycled materials and imitate wood extremely well. They are generally produced by manufacturers of composite decking. This material does not shrink or warp and needs little maintenance. Composite components are readily available specifically for railings and can be color coated if desired.

With so many deck railing options available it is always a wise decision to check with the local building department for regulations governing railing types and approved materials. This will ensure that the railing system selected will comply with codes and enhance the look of the deck at the same time.

Traditionally, deck material has been wood. Depending on what part of the country lived in, that might be redwood, western cedar or pressure-treated southern pine.

Other types of wood material are also becoming more available: Alaska yellow cedar and rain-forest hardwoods such as ipe and red meranti from Malaysia.

In addition, two new categories of deck material have appeared in recent years: composites made from natural wood fiber and recycled plastic and decking made from extruded vinyl.

A growing public sensitivity regarding hazardous chemicals has created the situation in which consumers have become increasingly receptive to environmentally advanced products. In the past southern pine was treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA). However, a new process has substituted alkaline copper quad (ACQ) as the preservative to create pressure treated deck material.

It continues to effectively fight rot, decay and insect attack. At the same time it's easy to use in any outdoor application and can be stained, painted or left to weather. Scraps of this wood can be disposed of by regular trash collection. More importantly, it is one of the least expensive deck materials.

Top grades of redwood are prized as deck material for their performance. Redwood is very stable and is naturally resistant to both rot and insects. It is easy to work and holds finishes well. The application of a protective finish every few years that contains mildewcides, water repellents and UV protections is a wise choice.

Western red cedar and Alaska yellow cedar are both resistant to decay, straight grained, easy to work and dimensionally stable. Western red cedar deck material has a red to brown color and is lighter in weight than Alaskan cedar or redwood. Yellow cedar is stronger and heavier and has a clear, bright color. It is more difficult to stain because of its density.

Tropical hardwoods can make great deck materials. Ipe, a related group of South American hardwoods, is highly resistant to rot and insect damage. It makes an extremely durable deck surface. Ipe is a premium decking product in terms of price. However, it has been exploited for years and is becoming an endangered species.

Meranti is a deck material from Malaysia, the Philippines and parts of Southeast Asia. It is also called Philippine mahogany or lauan. It is rated as being a step below redwood, cedar and ipe.

Composite deck material made from recycled plastic and ground-up waste wood is too flexible to be used for structural or load-bearing framing. Instead it is used mainly as decking. Other than periodic cleaning, composite deck material does not need any maintenance.

Vinyl deck materials are extruded from solid polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They are splinter free, inedible to insects, fungi and maintenance free and resistant to mildew and UV damage.

In the end, the choice of which deck material will be used comes down to a matter of money and availability. The ideal deck would have its framework and support posts made using pressure treated wood. The deck surface, fascia, railing and step systems would be constructed using the best deck materials that the homeowner could afford to buy.

Apart from the final cost, you must review the roofing estimates invited from different contractors to make sure that:

. The estimates include the use of quality material and not general run of the mill type of products.
. Details showing break up of costs reflecting material, labor and transportation costs separately and also ways to take care of any incidental problem(s) are included.

. The response(s) received by calling customer references are satisfactory.

The amount that the estimate reflects against the cost of material should be viewed carefully. If there is no breakdown reflecting material, labor and transportation separately, call the contractor and ask for details of the quality of material that is to be used. Many contractors use commodity-roofing material in an effort to lower overall costs to create the lowest bid. Although it may not always, necessarily lead to a bad roofing solution, in the long run it may be better to use hi-quality material to avoid the need of frequent repairs associated with the use of ordinary grade roofing material.

Talking of material quality, it should be kept in mind that the quality of sealant and insulation to be used are of primary importance. Thin insulation is slightly lower in cost than multi-layered insulation but will vitally affect the related recurring costs for power. A marginal cost increase for thicker insulation will lower regular costs of heating and air-conditioning for the life of the roof. However, if your home is in a place that has moderate weather through the year, you could go for thinner insulation for saving a bit on the costs.

Low quality sealing in the roofing project may later lead to maintenance woes. Some low budget estimates include the use of pitch pans where a better option is to use metal flashings, preferably made of copper. Such estimates may not include a provision for a covering plate at the seams, in case of a gravel top roof. Considering all implications, it would be a wise decision to pay a bit more and opt for better quality roofing.

Another very important factor for scrutiny is the quantity of the material budgeted. Even if you cannot get on the roof to take measurements of the actual roof dimensions to calculate the quantity of material required, you must check with your contractor for justification of quantity of material reflected in the budget. This will ensure that what you pay covers only the amount of material actually to be consumed in constructing your new roof and does not finance excess material which will never be used.

This will also help to determine if material less than the actual requirement has been reflected in an attempt to make a low bid. Such a case may later run up unexpectedly high costs. Also check the amount charged against labor costs. Many times it includes extra training costs incurred by the contractor or for hiring quality workmen. More often than not it is just for higher profit margins.

------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

Deck plans are the result of a design process in which all the various parts combine in a structure that is aesthetically appealing and also sturdy in nature. People often search for sources of a free deck plan that can be copied or modified to suit their needs. The simplest and most economical plans are often those with squared-off sides. Deck plans with curves are available but usually require more complex support frameworks and advanced carpentry skills in their construction. Free deck plans are also easy to obtain for multilevel decks connected by steps, stairs or ramps but they tend to require more work and expense than single level decks.

Individuals searching for a free deck plan make the mistake of not attempting to create their own unique one which would more likely suit their personal needs.

The process is simple. Take a tape measure out into the backyard, measure the distances from the house to the property lines, the locations of windows and doors, electrical outlets, dryer vents and water sources. Record these on a sheet of paper including other items such as trees, gardens, water features, sheds, etc.

Simply do a little bit of deck design work by lightly sketching in the possible shape, size and location of the deck in relation to the house and other backyard items. Eventually, when you have a design that has possibilities, confer with other members of the family for their input. Make any changes as a result of this conference.

Eventually transfer your idea to graph paper. Draw it to scale with one square on the graph paper representing a number of inches or feet. An example would be one square equals one foot. In planning a larger deck tape 2 or more sheets of graph paper together.

In creating a deck plan eliminate unnecessary waste, on-site cutting and extra expense by designing your deck with lumber in readily available standard lengths of 8, 10, 12 and 16 feet.

Building codes can vary from region to region so it is wise to visit your local building department to obtain information related to the design and construction of a deck. It's absolutely free so take advantage of it. This will help you avoid creating a deck design that will not be approved for some reason.

Make any changes needed as a result of your visit to the local building department.

Voila! You've just created your own free deck plan.

In the end the choice of a deck design will be made by selecting one of 2 sources - a free deck plan that ultimately will require some form of alteration or adaptation in order to meet the needs and desires of its new owner or an original deck plan drawn up by the homeowner that will suit the specific needs and aesthetic tastes of that family.

A leak in the roof of the house could be any homeowner's worst nightmare. It is true; no one would like to have a leak in the roof. It is very hard to locate the origin of the leakage as it shows up far away from the place where it originates. It is a pain at times, to find the leak. A leak in the roof could destroy precious pieces of furniture and ruin the whole look of the house. They could also cause damage to the structural integrity of the house. It could damage the sheathing and the framing of the house. The life of any type of roofing is not more than 20 years. It is very essential to fix the roofing problem before it gets out of hand. Do not ignore a leak as it will definitely grow and cause more problems.

Various solutions have come up to deal with roofing problems. If the roof of your house does have a problem do not panic. It is necessary to carry out the procedure calmly. The Internet is a great place to find out solution to roofing problems. You can also find tips, on how to prevent leaks. The Internet is also a good place to look for roofers. You could also enquire about roofers with your neighbors, families or friends.

Select an appropriate roofer and check if he/she is factory-certified. These roofers are trained at a factory and are known well for their work. It is important to carry out a small research before hiring a roofer. It is better to hire a local reputed roofer well known for his quality work. You also need to make sure the worker is well insured with workers' compensation fund. This way you will not be liable for any accident the worker may have in your house.

While roofing, you have to make sure that the workers abide by certain building codes laid on a national, state or local level. If these codes are not followed, the local building inspector may ask you to tear down the whole thing and then rebuild it. This will increase your expenses to repair. Another important factor to remember is the ventilation. There has to be enough ventilation in the attic to ensure a long life of the roof. Improper ventilation of the attic can damage the roof and the structure of the house.

Every roofing material has a manufacturer's warranty for any defects in the material. The conditions of the warranty will differ for products of different manufacturers. Warranty provided by the contractors is different from that provided by the manufacturers. The contractors will mostly provide guarantee on repairs made by their employees. It is good to have guaranty/warranty from both the manufacturers and the contractor. It is good to carry out financial background check on the manufacturers and the contractor, as they are susceptible to dissolve licensee within 5 years.

Far and away my hands-down choice for the ornamental garden is the mop-head hydrangea. While I may be slightly biased, there is no denying their beauty and flexibility as a hedge, border or I like them as specimens. They handle center of attention with grace and ease. The Endless Summer variety in particular, a cultivar of the Hydrangea macrophylla carries large blooms on both old and new wood so removing spent blooms on new growth will encourage even more. You'll have a variety of color almost all season, long after other plants have finished their show for the year.

Variety Is The Spice

It's large, distinctive flowers can grow up to 8 inches in diameter and the color can actually be changed by adjusting your soil's pH. If your soil is acidic, you'll be rewarded with a beautiful shade of blue. If you have alkaline soil the blooms will be pink. By adding very small amounts of aluminum sulfate, elemental sulfur or iron sulfate to alkaline soil, you lower its pH making it more acidic and turning your flowers blue - shoot for a range of about 5.2 to 5.5. I'm partial to blue because it's such a rare color in the garden.

A word of caution! Be very careful adding soil amendments such as aluminum sulfate mentioned above. Adding too much or adding it too quickly can kill your plant, then you'll be the one with the blue's.

If you're a fan of pink and you have acidic soil, add some dolomitic lime. Applied several times a year, lime raises the soil's pH and you'll want a range of about 6.0 to 6.2. Soil testing kits are available in garden centers everywhere.

Stay Cool Baby!

Hydrangeas in general like morning sun but need protection from the hot, mid-day sun. An easterly facing location, maybe under a tree, is the best place for these show-offs. I wish I'd known that 3 years ago, before I planted (an re-planted) mine 3 times, finally finding a spot on the southeast side of my house. They're doing splendidly now. Unlike most varieties of macrophylla, they're more resistance to mildew so the extra shade shouldn't cause problems. Aside from evenly moist soil they have very few demands. They are what I call an "easy care" plant. Ron Popeil might say "Set if and forget it." I wouldn't go that far. If anything I tend to overcare for my plants. I'm a hands-on guy and forget that mother nature has it figured out already.

Not Just Another Southern Belle

Endless Summer is hardy to zone 4 so those of us as far north as the southern most parts of Canada can enjoy their beauty. You'll want to stop fertilizing after mid August though to start preparing the plant for winter. Encouraging new growth at the end of the year is a mistake as any new growth probably won't survive the winter. Your soil must be kept moist in the fall up until the weather is cold enough to freeze the ground but don't feed the plant. Do add mulch (I usually put 5 or 6 inches of leaves, lawn waste etc. at the end of November), you'll want to insulate it from harsh winds and ensure the plant stays dormant even if there's a warm spell during the winter months.

Once the snow melts and the ground thaws in spring, uncover the plant, making sure to clear out near the base where leaves or grass may have gotten tangled. It's important to let the air and sunlight get in. It may take a while, you may even think the plant has died. I was sure I'd killed my Nikko Blue Hydrangeas the first year. For the longest time they just sat there looking a lot like dead sticks. Once the days got warmer though the growth began slowly, down at the base. A leaf here, a small branch there... I thought it was weeds. Thank god I didn't pull them!

Just In Case

Propagation of the Endless Summer Hydrangea is prohibited without a license, but nobody's going to blame you from wanting to protect your investment by growing a second plant for insurance. By taking short stem cuttings in the summer and placing them in a mixture of peat moss and sterile sand (play sand found at garden centers is fine), you can easily root a second plant in case your original doesn't survive the winter.

Not That You'd Be Tempted But...

On a side note, if you have dogs like mine (they're puppies, they eat EVERYTHING), Hydrangeas are toxic. The plant contains cyanogenic glycosides. If Fido chews on any part of the plant, Hydrogen cyanide is released and can make for a very sick dog - or worse.

Fresh-Cut, Ready For The Table

Hydrangeas make wonderful dried flower arrangements. The color they bring to your garden can be brought into your home. You'll want to wait and not cut the newly blossomed stems though. The best results come from the blooms that have already started to dry on the stem, once the petals have started to dry and feel papery to the touch. Cut them, strip the leaves, stick them in a vase and bring them into the house. You don't even need to put them in water. You can get more elaborate and use special materials to dry fresher blossoms and retain even more color. Silica Gel can be dusted onto the flower and left to dry for 4 or 5 days. After 5 days, take the flower out shake off the excess silica gel onto a newspaper and save it for another flower. I've even heard of people using kitty litter as a less expensive alternative to the silica gel.

While there are other equally beautiful plants available for your garden, the Hydrangea brings a versatility that few other plants can claim. Their long-lasting blooms in Pinks and blues stand proud long after most others have called it a day. They ask little and reward well.

We have all heard of composting. Composting is simply the decomposition of organic waste like yard waste and kitchen waste into a very rich and nutritional dirt-like substance. Vermicomposting is very similar to composting, but vermicomposting uses worms to help speed up the composting process, resulting in a final product of a soil-like amendment which is literally loaded with nutrients for plants.

The first thing to know point out is that the worms about which we are talking are not your everyday backyard worms. Those little guys would die in a minute in a compost pile. The worms needed for vermicomposting are called Red Wrigglers. These Red Wrigglers love to spend their time in piles of manure and love eating organic waste, which is why they are so perfect for the job of vermicomposting. The worms that you find in your backyard garden are usually regular field worms which would not be able to survive in a pile of kitchen waste.

When considering what size bin you want to use, the container should be on the shallow side rather than really deep. It should also be wider than it is tall. The surface of the container should be about one square foot for every pound of waste you wish to place in it each week. There should be about 500 red wrigglers equaling about a half-pound for every cubic foot of the container. The container should have plenty of air holes, since air is necessary not only for the composting process, but for the worms' survival as well. There should also be holes on the bottom of the container to allow drainage. There should be a screen covering each air hole and drainage hole to guarantee that the holes do not become worm holes or compost holes as well as air holes and/or drainage holes. If you produce too much organic waste for one normal sized container, it is much easier to maintain several small worm containers than one really big one.

To keep your worms happy, it is important to make sure that they are in an environment with the proper temperature, ventilation, and moisture. The air holes should be able to provide the necessary ventilation. There should be enough moisture to give the compost pile the feel of a wrung out sponge - not too wet, but not too dry. The temperature should be room temperature. Although worms can survive in a wide range of temperatures, anywhere from forty to ninety degrees Fahrenheit, they will be the happiest and therefore do their best work if they are at a comfortable room temperature.

There should be bedding on the surface of the container. This bedding should consist of shredded paper if the container will remain indoors. If the container will be kept outdoors, the bedding can consist of shredded paper or organic yard waste, such as dried grass clippings, sawdust, mulched dried leaves, etc. Yard waste should NOT be placed in an indoor container, because they can cause the compost pile to heat-up significantly which may kill your worms.

You can feed your worms a large variety of foods. Red Wrigglers will eat just about any organic kitchen waste you may produce, including carrots lettuce, cabbage, celery, banana peels, and tea bags. Tomatoes, coffee grounds, and citrus peels can be added into the container but only in moderation, since the acid could kill the worms. They also like to eat small amounts of bread, pancakes, grains, and noodles. Chopping up the food before you put it in the container will help it decompose.

You should harvest the vermicompost every two months or so. You will know that it is ready to be harvested when you can no longer make out the waste or the bedding, since they will have already decomposed. A good way to harvest the vermicompost without taking out the worms is to shine a light over the pile. This will chase the worms deeper into the pile in about ten minutes. You can then scrape up the top layer of vermicompost. Keep the light on to chase the worms even deeper into the pile, and then take out the next layer of vermicompost, and so on. It is very important to not take out any worm eggs that may be in the pile. They will hatch and turn into more worms which could make your vermicompost pile better, or enable you to use them to start another vermicompost container.

Once you have the vermicompost out of the container, you can use it to help just about anything grow. You can add some into your houseplants; you can sprinkle it on your flowerbeds; you can add it into the soil in which you want to plant seeds; and you can even sprinkle it around your lawn to help your lawn grow.

------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

It has got to be the most commonly asked question about starting a new lawn. Anybody who has ever contemplated starting a new lawn has pondered this question. Sod or seeds? Ordering topsoil and seeds is cheaper and offers you more of a variety of grass types. Sod on the other hand, gives you a beautiful and healthy lawn instantly. It is basically the microwave for lawns, but it costs quite a bit more than topsoil and seeds. Which one is right for you? Let's take a look at each. Then you can make an educated choice based upon your needs.

The first thing you need to do, regardless of which method you choose, is prepare your lawn. This means that you need to get rid of any grass and/or weeds that may be there. There are a number of tools you can use for this including flat-bladed shovels and sod-cutters. Regardless of which tool you use, be sure to get the grass and/or weeds from their roots. If you do not get their roots, you are wasting your time.

The next thing you need to do is have your topsoil chemically tested to see which type of grass you will need. There are a few tests that should be run, including figuring out the pH and the sodium adsorption rate, to name a couple. These tests will probably cost about thirty dollars or so, but it is well worth the investment. After all, who wants to go through the trouble of making a new lawn only to wake up one morning to a weed-infested, yellow lawn?

The next step is to till. This includes buying or renting a tiller and breaking up all of the compacted topsoil of your soon-to-be lawn. Then, apply a starter fertilizer and compost to the topsoil. After adding the fertilizer and compost into the mix, it is important to till again. This will work the fertilizer and compost into the topsoil. Be sure that it is level, and if slanted, slanted away from your house so that your house does not flood from water run-off. If necessary, grab a rake and rake the topsoil to level the topsoil completely.

You will then need to buy or rent a roller. This will level the topsoil completely. The main idea here is to ensure that the topsoil is COMPLETELY level. This is where you must decide how to answer that age-old question we were talking about earlier. Below I will go through the steps to starting your new lawn by planting seeds.

PLANTING GRASS SEEDS

This is where you need to track down a seed spreader. If you think it is as simple as loading the seeds in the seed spreader and spreading them over your new lawn, think again. You will actually need to spread the seeds three or four times. After making three or four evenly stacked piles of seeds, load them one at a time and spread them evenly over your lawn. The key is to push the seed spreader in a different direction each time. A good way to do this, is to make four even piles of seeds and then to start in each of the four corners of your lawn. This will ensure that the seeds get evenly dispersed, which will ensure a full lawn.

At this point, you should rake the topsoil lightly to make sure that the seeds are covered in topsoil. The next step is to use the roller again; but this time you need to make sure to take the water out of the drum. This is because you want to roll the lawn lightly. At this point, you are done planting.

Now the only thing you need to do is water your new lawn several times every day. You need to water the lawn with just a light spray, though, because you do not want to flood your new lawn with too much water, or else it may just never be a lawn. The key is to keep the topsoil moist evenly at all times throughout the day, so the weather will also have an impact on your watering schedule. If you do not have time for this, you should install automatic sprinklers.

It is important to plant grass seeds at the right time. The "right time" will vary based upon where you live and what your climate is. It is best to speak to whoever will be supplying you with your supplies about when is the best time to lay sod in your particular area. There are a number of ways to go about finding a local landscaper who can supply you with all the supplies needed to lay sod, but it is nice knowing that you are using a reputable company.
