Many homeowners are choosing to install a bathtub in their home today. For a period of time, bathtubs seemed to fall out of vogue. Many homeowners today are rethinking the value of a bathtub as well as having a time-saving shower in their bath.

With the busy lifestyle of today's homeowner, many who are remodeling their bathroom want a tub for those times when they are retreating to the more relaxing atmosphere of home after a hectic day in the workplace.

The bathtubs of today offer many options. For some a deep soaking tub has great appeal. These are available in both one and two person styles. The two person tub is a great addition to a master suite.

The vintage tub has also gained in popularity. The vintage nostalgic aspect can add greatly to the experience of a warm relaxing soak. These tubs come in both the clawfoot version and also as pedestal tubs and can make an attractive statement in a bathroom that is completely fitted to reflect a Victorian style.

Whirlpool bathtubs have also made a great gain in the homes of today. These force both air and water through jets and give a massaging action. Many are firm in the belief that they have a genuine theraputic effect. Certainly they add enjoyment and relaxation which in itself is to be valued in today's busy lifestyle.

Before installing a whirlpool tub, it is good to give the option some thought. Depending on the size of your hot water system, a new hot water tank may be needed. Investigating the noise factor, and also the maintenance needs is a good idea as well.

Composition of bathtubs

Bathtubs are available in a diverse selection of materials, such as enameled cast iron, enameled steel, fiberglass, acrylic, and even the very pricey and elegant copper tub.

Each has it's merits and it's drawbacks and also different maintenance and cleaning requirements as well as a variety of price points.

Shower-tub combination

For homeowners who have a very small bathroom, and no way to enlarge it, a bathtub-shower combination can be a solution, since it is possible to have both in only the space a tub would normally occupy.

Adding a tub in an existing structure can be a tricky situation. Before making a commitment, do be sure and take accurate measurements both to assure the tub will fit in the bathroom, and that it can travel through the household to it's final destination.

There is no cultural difference between orchids and other garden plants. All green plants have five basic growth requirements: air, sunlight, warmth, food, and water. Cultural divergences among plants are not qualitative, only quantitative.

The same is true with orchids. They must be given these five factors in certain definite proportions which are, however, considerably different from those most other plants receive.

Rule No. 1

Provide orchids with usually not less than 40 per cent and usually not more than 70 per cent atmospheric moisture (relative humidity) during the day.

While most plants get along on a definitely predetermined modicum of growth factors, several have eccentricities which should be pampered a bit. The eccentricity of orchids is that they require more atmospheric moisture than many other plants. Orchids are dependent on humidity owing to their strange, evolutionary adaptation to their native climate

Rule No. 2

Orchids must have an abundance of fresh air at all times.

In outdoor gardening there is little to worry about if the air moves easily around the plants and is kept moist on warm days by evaporation from soil or other suitable material that is occasionally wet down. Usually, orchids grown outdoors for summer culture are set above the ground on inverted pots in order to insure the best air circulation and the most efficient use of air moisture. If drainage is excellent, potted terrestrials may be sunk into the ground.

Indoors, plant and human requirements for ventilation are essentially similar. A house that is healthy for humans is equally healthy for plants. If you possess a modern air conditioning unit that continuously circulates moist warm or cool air, depending on the season, the problem of ventilation is solved.

Rule No. 3

Orchids must have the maximum amount of sunlight they can stand without injury.

Since the effect of light on orchids is still largely experimental, it is wiser to try out all orchid plants. Give them a reasonably large and continuous amount of light - the light that passes through sleazy muslin is good for a start. Then gradually transfer them to shadier places until the correct light intensity is reached.

Rule No. 4

Orchids require protection only from frost and snow.

This does not mean that warmth is not necessary to all orchids, nor does it preclude the use of artificial heat in rigorous climates. It implies that man-made heat cannot compete beneficially with nature stimulating warmth. Artificial heat is a temporizing and last resort.

Rule No. 5

Orchids must be fed. They must have a sufficient supply of continuously available mineral nutrients.

The symptoms of malnutrition in orchids are not yet completely understood. These symptoms seem to follow the same general pattern in orchids as in other garden plants. A lack of nitrogen stunts growth and causes leaves to become yellow at the tip. Excess nitrogen produces rapid, soft, and flabby growth.

These are the fundamentals of orchid culture - humidity, air, light, protection, and food. The corollaries of composting and watering depend upon them and are manual processes which may be suited to your convenience. But don't try to change the rules governing the basic needs of orchids. Orchids are tolerant, but they have certain minimum growth requirements which must always be taken into account.

------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

As a beginner you need only the bare essentials; and there is no need to buy the very highest grade instruments until you are thoroughly familiar with their use. Here is a complete list of first essentials for everyone who is going to do mechanical drawing.

1 small drawing board
1 45-degree triangle
1 60-degree triangle
1 cheap wooden T-square
1 pencil eraser and 1 ink eraser
1 erasing shield
1 box of thumb tacks or roll of tape
6 good drawing pencils
3 bottles of Higgins ink
2 quires of white paper about 18" by 28"
1 protractor
1 ruling pen
1 compass combination
1 pencil bow compass and 1 pen bow compass
1 triangular scale
2 French curves
2 penholders and two Hunt lettering pens
1 fine lettering pen with holder

The Drawing Pencil

Obviously the drawing pencil is the draftsman's most important and useful tool. Every job which he does must be laid out in pencil first before it is inked in. For this reason it is important that you know a few things about the pencil that you are going to use.

There are two kinds of pencils in use: the regular writing pencil used by clerks, stenographers, businessmen and most other people; and the drawing pencil which is used by artists, draftsmen and engineers. This pencil is sold in art supply stores and the better stationery stores. It usually comes in 16 or 17 degrees of lead, from the extremely hard (9H) to the extremely soft (6B). The 9H pencil is almost like a nail, while the 6B is so soft it will blacken your fingers if you touch it.

The average draftsman uses either the 2H or the 4H because these pencils are hard enough to keep the work from getting smudgy and dirty, yet soft enough to show a clean, clear line which may be easily erased. Nearly everything you will do in mechanical drawing is done in ink; consequently, the pencil drawing is only the guide to the finished ink drawing.

For this reason the pencil drawing must be clear, crisp, clean and easy to erase after inking. The 2H, 3H, 4H or 5H pencil is ideal for this, although the 2H is probably best for the beginner. One final thing to remember: SAVE ALL YOUR PENCIL DRAWINGS because you will be required to ink them in later on when you learn how to use the ruling pen and compass.

Summary of Nevers

1. NEVER draw with a dull point.
2. NEVER sharpen the grade mark off the pencil.
3. NEVER sharpen your pencil near your drawing.
4. NEVER rub pencil dust off your drawing; blow it off.
5. NEVER bear down too heavily on your pencil.
6. NEVER draw a very heavy pencil line unless absolutely necessary.

Drawing Board Equipment and Its Use

The drawing board equipment consists, essentially, of a drawing board, two triangles, a T-square, some Scotch masking tape or some thumb tacks, a triangular scale and a good ruler, half-dozen pencils and a pencil eraser, a sharpening block and a few razor blades.

The paper you use is not too important at present, for you will do practice work only. It is well to get some drawing paper or other kind of paper that will take ink because you will be inking in your pencil drawings later on, and if the paper does not hold ink properly (if it runs into the paper like a blotter), you will not get a satisfactory ink drawing.

Once you have this equipment you are ready to draw.

Herb gardening has practical value and with herb gardening you can actually use your plants for something other than making your yard look pretty. When most people think of herb gardening they automatically think of cooking, but herbs are also grown for their pleasant aroma and their beauty. Several of the most popular herbs such as basil, chives, mint, thyme, Sage, and lavender will be discussed in the paragraphs that follow.

One of the most common herbs gown in herb gardening is basil. Basil should be grown in a position that receives a good amount of sunlight. It's best to remove any flowers that appear since this will help preserve the plant's flavor and inspire the plant to grow more leaves. Remember to not to pick all the leaves off one plant; instead just pick a few leaves from several plants and always pick the top layver of leaves first. Basil can be used in fresh or dried form. To dry Basil, cut the stems at soil level and dry them in a dehydrator or hang bunches of stems up to air dry in a warm room. This drying process usually takes about a week. Once the leaves are dried, remove them from the stems and store them in a dry, airtight container for up to 12 months.

Chives are pretty sturdy and don't need much care. If the soil is fertile, a light mulching in the spring will provide sufficient nutrients. Remove blossoms as soon as they've passed their peak. Divide plants every 3 or 4 years in the spring to keep them healthy. Chives can start being harvested about 6 weeks after the seeds are planted, or as soon as established plants resume growth in the spring. Cut the outer leaves down to the base. Chives can be Used fresh or frozen. They don't retain their flavor well when they're dried.

Mint is pretty simple to grow. It thrives in sun or partial shade and will grow well in average soils. Mint plants are pretty sturdy and will tough it out during droughts and heat. Mint grows well with little water and fertilizer really isn't needed in most cases. Mint plants can be feisty and will crowd out other plants if given the chance. It may be best to plant them with a little distance from other plants. Leaves can be harvested at any time and can be used fresh, dried, or frozen. It's to your benefit to pick them in the morning because this is when the oils are strongest. Spread leaves out to dry in a cool and ventilated area. Once dried, be sure to store in an airtight container away from other herbs.

Thyme thrives in containers. Thyme plants can pretty much grow themselves. The less fuss the better the plant grows. Thyme is most fragrant and flavorful when it's grown in somewhat dry soil. Too much moisture will rot the plants. It's best to put one plant in each 6-inch pot, or groups of plants in larger containers. Use a sandy soil mix and don't water excessively. It's extremely important for thyme plants to have good drainage. Once fully grown (usually several months), thyme plants can be harvested at any time by snipping the stems.

Sage is another great plant for herb gardens. Sage grows best in a warm, sunny location, but try to avoid extreme heat. Pretty much the only soil necessity is that it be well-drained. The plants should be pruned after they flower and they should be fertilized in early spring. It's best to let the plant grow for a year untouched. After the first year, the leaves can be harvested at anytime. Keep in mind that the leaves are considered to be at their best before or just after blooming. Harvest individual leaves as needed. To dry sage, hang the stalks in a shady,well-ventilated area until the leaves crumble easily, then store in tightly lidded jars. Sage is known to keep its flavor better when it's stored in the freezer. Freeze leaves or stalks on a tray, then move the leaves into a zippered bag or container.

Lavender is probably the best smelling herb you can grow. Lavender doesn't like wet soil and prefers lots of sunlight. It's best to prune lavender plants every spring. When trimming, be sure to cut back all the overgrown stems and flowers to expose the original plant. Once the flowers get bright and vivid, it's time to start cutting. It's best to cut the plants when it's cool, becuase it uses its oil to cool itself and if it is cut in the heat there will be less of the fragrant aroma to enjoy. To dry the lavender, put it in small groups by tying with a twist tie and hanging in a dark dry place or individually by spreading them on a screen. Be sure to dry them out of the sun. Once dry, the buds can also be stripped and used as bulk for potpourri, sachets, or even cooking.

These are just a few of the herbs you can grow in your herb garden. Overall, herbs are relatively easy to grow and they aren't that picky. Growing your own herbs will give you much fresher herbs with alot more flavor and best of all it will save you alot of money.

The desire for color in the garden is best satisfied by the liberal use of annuals, perennials and bulbs in variety. All three classes of plants have their place, because each has its value as to season of bloom, height or mass of color.

Succession of bloom from early spring to late fall is the goal of nearly every gardener. To achieve this consider first that very few hardy flowers have an individual blooming period of more than two or three weeks. Even annuals bloom only during the summer. Therefore, even for a small garden, one may have to select several dozen different kinds of plants to assure bloom from March to killing frost.

Your climate will determine how early in the spring and how late in the fall you can have flowers. An added factor is the location of your garden. Low spots in valleys often suffer more from frosts than those at slightly higher elevation, or on hillsides. This is usually due to lack of air drainage to carry the cold air away.

Planning the Flower Garden

The skillful gardener employs numerous devices to achieve a colorful flower bed or border. For example, by planting spring flowering bulbs between and beneath other flowers, each square foot of ground should give at least two crops of bloom.

Conversely, after spring bulbs, such as daffodils and tulips, are through blooming, they may be interplanted with annuals for summer bloom. As summer blooming annuals go by in September, they can be followed by chrysanthemum clumps transplanted from another part of the garden. An orderly plan, made in advance, will simplify the task of keeping the show going from season to season.

The kinds of flowers you grow will be determined in a measure by the amount of sunlight available. This will vary from bed to bed, from one side of the house to the other. Most flowers will thrive in full sun but a few require shade. Others are shade tolerant, though doing better with a greater amount of sunlight. So it is possible to have flowers in the shade of trees, shrubs and buildings even where no direct sunlight reaches. Such plants as ferns, many wild flowers, and begonias have to be protected from the summer sun, for otherwise they may sun-scorch.

When making a plan, it is important to know how tall each kind of flower grows so as not to plant tall growing ones in front of low ones. The habit of growth should be known too, so as not to crowd massive clumps like peonies next to smaller, weaker growers such as peachleaf bellflowers; or sprawling coreopsis next to a low, tufted Japanese primrose. Very rank growers like the plume poppy and spreading Chinese lantern are really best kept out of beds with other flowers altogether.

Much has been said and written about planning color schemes in the garden. They are fascinating to think about, but often difficult to work out. Do not be disconcerted if the results are not as expected. Flowers have an irritating way of not blooming just when they should, so that carefully planned combinations may not materialize. Colors vary too. Blues in catalogs are not always your idea of blue. This goes for lavender, purple, red, pink, orange, yellow and so on through the rainbow. In any case, there is enough green foliage to subdue impossible color combinations.

Some people like to have their flowers in the front of the house where they can be seen. Others prefer to enjoy them in privacy. It is well to remember that in early spring and fall the weather may not be conducive to outdoor enjoyment.

Plant so that cold weather bloom may be enjoyed from the warmth and comfort of the home, using the windows as a means of access to the garden. Flowers can also be planted so as to be seen from the patio or picnic area. In every instance, a garden with a pleasing pattern or design and an adequate background is more satisfying than one without.

With some planning, you should be able to achieve a beautiful flower garden.

When you decide to remodel your kitchen, the type of counters that you put in can greatly affect the amount of return this project will earn you on your home.

The value of the property will increase substantially if you do a good job bringing the kitchen up to date and the type of counters that you choose to have installed need to be appropriate for the appearance of the room.

When it comes to counter materials, you have a few different options to choose from, but a large number of remodeling jobs are choosing stone and natural materials for this application.

If you want to go with a cheaper material, you can use a laminate or ceramic tile, since these are pretty affordable. If you want to replace the material that already exists in an outdated kitchen and not do any real upgrading, then this might be the way to go.

Laminate is easily damaged by scratching or chipping very often and any water that gets underneath the resin will cause the wood to swell up and deform.

Ceramic tile has its own perks and drawbacks. This is one of the only types of countertop material that can be done yourself, since all the other materials need special skills and tools. Any mistakes that you make, though, will be readily visible.

This is much cheaper than laminate, coming in at about $10 a square foot. The bad thing about tile is the grout, since it is difficult to clean and needs to be sealed more than once over time.

The higher end stuff is natural and engineered stone. This includes slate, granite, and marble for the natural stone materials and the engineered stones are made of pebbles, epoxy, quartz, and other materials. These will make your kitchen look very high-end.

The bad thing about stone is that it needs to be sealed. Natural stone also does not handle heat as well as some would like, but engineered stone does a little better in this aspect. Engineered stone also does not stain as easily.

The last material that you could have installed in your kitchen as a countertop is stainless steel. Be prepared to shell out a good amount of cash for this, though. It has been used in commercial kitchens for a long time and can be made into almost any shape you need.

Making the right choice for you and your home is an important step. Make sure you are aware of the options, pro's and con's of each product before making your final choice.

------------------ ARTICLE START ------------------

The truth about an amateur concrete masonry project is that the results can be every bit as good as a job done by a professional. Both in appearance and structurally, the job you do can rate A-l on the building inspector's card. There will be a difference in time due to the fact that the pro can work faster, but the amateur need not worry about speed - the end result is more important than the time needed to accomplish it.

Mixing in wheelbarrow is good system for amateur mason. A good batch can be mixed this way and a deep barrow easily contains the wet ingredients.

The mixture for concrete, actually an artificial stone, consists of a blend of fine and coarse aggregates, each piece of which is completely surrounded and held to its mates by hardened Portland cement paste. A chemical reaction, which occurs ideally due to favorable temperatures and the presence of moisture while curing, causes the paste to harden.

The most important rule is to be ready when the ready-mix truck arrives. Have grading done, forms in and friends around to help you.

Concrete mix lacking in finer particles will be hard to handle and place. It will be rough to finish and deep pours will have honeycombed surfaces.

Light troweling fills all spaces between coarse aggregates with finer particles with correctly proportioned mix. Such a workable mix also produces most concrete for a given amount of cement.

The water to cement ratio is probably the most important factor as far as the strength of mix is concerned. Too much water will result in a thin, diluted cement-paste that will be weak and porous when it hardens. It will not bond the aggregates nor will it be watertight.

The correct water-cement paste, and this is important, produces a mix with maximum strength. The amateur will often use more water than necessary because it makes a more fluid mix that flows easily into the forms. Such a project may look O.K. to begin with (although there will probably be finishing problems due to excess moisture), but it will eventually be discovered to lack strength and durability.

Actually, too little water is much better than too much. The less water you use (and still come up with a workable mix), the stronger the mix will be! Ideally, the proportions suggested should be exactly followed by measuring precise quantities of perfectly dry aggregates.

Since this is difficult to do under normal conditions, a good procedure to adopt, after aggregates and cement have been thoroughly mixed, is to add a small amount of water at a time (mixing as you go) until the concrete is pliable and yet can be compacted in your hand and placed so it will stand without crumbling. When a more fluid mix is required add more water and more cement to keep a correct proportion.

Pour the concrete where it's most needed. If there's room available, a truck can move from spot to spot. Spread and tamp pour with hoe or rake.

A shovel is also useful for spreading the concrete mix. Boots should be worn by workman - a good idea since you'll probably have to walk in topour.

Aggregates can be fine or coarse. Fine aggregate is usually sand although other materials may be substituted. The ideal sand for concrete contains particles that vary uniformly in size from very fine grit up to 4 in. The gradation from fine to coarse is important because the finer particles fill the spaces between the larger pieces.

With these tips you should be ready to start your project.

Article Title: Greenhouse Watering - Know When to Water and How Much

Greenhouse plants in pots, flats, or benches are completely dependent on the grower for their needs. Watering is perhaps the most important and demanding job of all. Establishing a good greenhouse watering schedule is important.

Most plants are largely made up of water. A growing plant gives off tremendous quantities of moisture (in the form of vapor) through its leaves; this is called transpiration. If water is not available in the soil so the plant's roots can replace this transpiration, the plant will wilt and quite possibly die.

With potted plants there is a simple and generally reliable way to tell when water is needed. Rap the pot with the metal part of the hose. A dull thud means the soil is moist, a sharp click that it is dry. Or you can be guided by the feel of the top-soil. If it is still slightly moist to the touch, the plant does not need watering.

Plants growing in the unheated or cool greenhouse do not need as much water as those in a warm greenhouse. You will find, too, that plants in small pots dry out faster than those in large pots. As has been said, "There is nothing 'thirstier' than a healthy plant growing in a 2-inch pot, especially in summer." The last three words rate re-emphasis, for in sunny, summer weather plants use water rapidly and the soil in the pots may become so dry you have to water twice a day or more.

Cyclamens and gardenias require frequent watering. They grow fastest when their soil is always slightly moist. Cacti and geraniums, on the other hand, do not need much water, although geraniums need more than is commonly supposed. Plants affected by a disease usually need less water than healthy specimens.

Remember this: It's always better to under-water than to over-water. You want your plants to mature as quickly as possible so you can turn them into cash but they must be at their best. Keeping them too wet does not promote stocky growth.

Many growers still prefer the tried and true watering method; that is, fill the pot up to the top with water and let it seep through the soil. For this to be practical (and require just one filling) there must be at least % inch of space at the top, more in large pots. Do not let plants stand long in water. Watering thoroughly at intervals is better than a slight moistening each day, which only reaches the upper soil and roots.

Of course, vigorously growing plants need more water than dormant or slow-growing ones. Water oftenest during hot summer weather and in winter when the sun is bright. Give less water during cloudy spells or when humidity is high. For example: Through one summer which was unusually hot, but with very high humidity, I found that plants in flats in my greenhouse required watering only twice a week; potted plants needed it only every other day.

However, in hot but dry weather the plants in flats needed water at least three or four times a week, the potted ones every day, and often twice a day. If possible, water plants in the morning, so the sun can evaporate the water during the day. Wet foliage at night is prone to mildew or fungus troubles.

Syringing plants with a strong stream of water will remove dust and wash off red spider mites, but do not expose plants to direct sunlight until they have dried off. Sun shining on wet foliage causes burned spots, particularly on hairy-leaved plants like African violets and gloxinias.

Make sure that you establish a greenhouse watering schedule that works best for your plants.

Discovering the pleasure and reward of green house gardening often leads gardeners to consider building a hobbyist greenhouse. Not only does a greenhouse gardening allow a year-round gardening hobby, it can provide a bounty of fresh herbs and vegetables, or unique and exotic plant varieties that might not weather well outdoors.

Green house gardening is a creative and rewarding experience, but planning and purchasing a new greenhouse can be somewhat intimidating, for event he most seasoned gardener.

Developing a thoughtful plan before buying a greenhouse will guide you in building an attractive, practical structure that's perfectly suited to your gardening needs. Analyzing your goals, site, and environmental conditions will help you make the first decision: whether to build a green house from scratch or begin with a kit. Click here to for greenhouses at the best price.

GREENHOUSE NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Let's begin at the beginning...

1) What is your greenhouse's purpose? To grow herbs or vegetables year-round? To store this season's annuals and replant them next year? To grow exotic "hothouse" flowers that require loving devotion and strictly controlled environmental conditions? If your greenhouse goal is to raise vegetables and flowers year-round, a warm greenhouse with maximum light, lots of headroom and space for shelving may be necessary. If you only wish to grow house plants, you will probably require less light, shelving and headroom. If you're just seeking a space to start plants from seeds and propagate a few cuttings, you may only need a small, temporary greenhouse covered with plastic film.

2) What size should your greenhouse be? Knowing your green house gardening goals will guide you in determining how much square footage you'll need. In general,100 square feet is the bare minimum required, in order to allow for benches and aisles. Veteran greenhouse gardeners will tell you to build a larger greenhouse than you think you'll need. You'll almost certainly want to add more benches, expand your plant inventory, and even grow the sort of plants you never dreamed you'd want to grow simply because you can. If you plan well, you'll find that your greenhouse offers lots of growing and propagating flexibility.

3) How much time can you commit to green house gardening? Be realistic about the amount of time you can devote to greenhouse construction and, ultimately, operation. Greenhouses require constant time and energy. There's no point in planning an elaborate greenhouse if it's going to sit idle because you can't find time to maintain it.

4) How much will it cost to supply a greenhouse with heat, water and electricity? Depending on your climate and heating options, you may find that winter heating costs can become expensive. Heating costs may well influence the size, shape, and construction of your greenhouse. Consult your utility provider for help in estimating the energy costs associated with various greenhouse construction styles. Your site options may also influence energy costs. For example, a greenhouse with a southern exposure and sloped glazing will collect the most solar heat energy. It's also a good idea to check into the possibility of heating solely with solar energy.

5) Is a building permit necessary? It's a good idea to check your local building design and zoning ordinances before building the greenhouse. For example, there may be specific construction ordinances governing setback, construction materials, home attachment. Whether you're assembling a prefabricated greenhouse kit or constructing a greenhouse from a blueprint, you may need a building permit.

6) Will having a greenhouse increase your property taxes? You may need to check with the local property tax assessor to determine whether your structure will be classified as temporary or permanent, and whether taxes will be levied against it.

7) What will your budget permit? Simple poly tunnel greenhouses can cost as little as a couple hundred dollars, but elaborate prefabricated glazed kits can easily cost several thousand dollars. Be sure to include the costs of shelving, gardening implements, and soil components and fertilizers. Quality shelving alone can add substantial cost.

Once you have answers to these basic questions about your plans for green house gardening, you'll be on your way to choosing a greenhouse that's right for you.

Moroccan design and motif are very beautiful combinations of colors and art. These designs are evident in many Moroccan inspired buildings and areas. There are many items that can easily turn an ordinary room or home into a Moroccan inspired home. Moroccan tiles are among the very first things that can inspire a Moroccan motif. These tiles have their own very unique designs that are a blend of deep rich colors and mosaic designs. Some tiles depict arches and other Middle Eastern designs that are prevalent in their culture.

Moroccan Tiles Designs

Many Moroccan tiles have mosaic designs that are an echo of their very rich culture and history. Some are a combination of white with deep blue or deep green mosaic designs. Others are really handcrafted tiles which makes their designs all the more unique. Moroccan tiles can become a breathtaking are in the house and they are usually used in water areas and chimneys as well as living rooms. Of course, to have a thoroughly Moroccan motif, other paraphernalia must be added to your Moroccan inspired area.

Pillows, scarves and gauzy curtains and veils can add to the Moroccan motif that you strive to achieve. These additional items must be complementary to your Moroccan tiles to achieve a Moroccan feel. The usual colors for Moroccan tiles are deep blues, greens and reds with other tiles made up of combinations of dazzling shapes and figures to look like mosaic tiles.

The Cost of Moroccan Tiles

Nowadays, Moroccan tiles are not as expensive as handcrafted ones because many manufacturers have developed methods to make these with minimum material and labor costs. In spite of the commercialized aspect of making Moroccan tiles, the designs and beauty of these are still very reminiscent of their rich culture and heritage. Some people ultimately used Moroccan tiles to accent some areas of their living room or bathroom or fountains. This is because these tiles may still costs more than ordinary ones and to make your whole area with them can be very expensive.

The average price of a single piece of Moroccan tile is around $5. Some stores sell them by the piece while others sell them by packs. These packs may contain ten pieces or 12 pieces and the price per pack is usually multiplied per piece. These tiles can really change the way an area of your home may look which is why many people get them for small areas of their homes.

Like so many Americans, you probably work in an office, spending up to 80 hours a week, cranking out the numbers, diligently working and, contrary to what your boss thinks, not merely downloading videos.
Well, okay, there was that one isolated incident, but come on, everybody had to see that beatbox flute guy clip, right? And like so many Americans, you probably spend these full time hours seated, oblivious to the fact that this seemingly benign activity, according to Ergonomics-Information website, "exerts great stress on the back because it transfers the full weight of the upper body onto the buttocks and thighs.

Of course, you probably realize that something is up when your mid-back aches or feels numb, when your knees throb, when that midmorning headache has some extra bite. Typical chair design, most chairs in most work places, provide inadequate support for the seated body, which can lead to back pain, fatigue, and as a result, can decrease work performance.

But there is a science to the rescue: ergonomics. Not merely the concept of bending at your knees versus your back when lifting heavy objects, ergonomics is the science of "equipment design intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort" (the American Heritage Dictionary, Fourth Edition). I guess it is comforting to know that somewhere in Sweden, there is a team of scientists thinking about sculpting and molding chairs that support the proper S-curve of the spine, as well as proper blood flow to the low back and buttocks. However, it is well documented that something as simple as proper ergonomic design reduces fatigue and minimizes the stress on the body. Workers with better posture, with chairs that support such posture will be able to do more, to be more productive, or to fly through Amazon site in search of "Star Trek: the next generation" DVDs with extra verve.

What it boils down to is the concept of shaping the work environment, in this case the chair, to the needs of the worker and not the other way around. A brief perusal of ergonomic chairs may be a strange experience. They often look like lofty and uncomfortable apparatuses. For instance, the Australian Kneelsit ergonomic chair looks like a piece of exercise equipment: not only is its seat angled forward and down, but it features an additional pad to support the knees. But they seem to work well, according to their website, their funky looking chairs were shortlisted for the 1997 Australian Industrial Design Award. More to the point, the chair, and others like it, coerces the body into an open posture that supports the lumbar vertebrae. You can say goodbye to those aches and pains, and look forward to comfortable work days and a retirement without the need for a cane.

Of course, proper ergonomics, and the benefits associated with it go beyond chair design. It is advised that the office worker take occasional stretch breaks, stay hydrated, and rest the wrists. As I sit here, on a decidedly non-ergonomic stool at a coffee shop, I can actually feel some soreness in the shoulders, as well as a dull ache in my low back. As October is national ergonomics month, it is high time that I personally looked into a proper ergonomic chair. It would make one more efficient worker, and a host of happier Swedish ergonomic engineers.

There is probably nothing that discourages a home handyman faster than being unable to find a specific tool quickly when it is needed. Some kind of wall rack or storage system should be set up for all tools as soon as possible. Arrange tools so that all screwdrivers are together, all pliers together, etc.

If lack of space does not permit putting up a regular workshop wall rack, then buy or build a tool box with compartments for all items. Do not simply throw everything together in one empty box. Sharp tools will be damaged, and small ones lost or misplaced.

Identify Tools

When working outdoors, the home handyman will frequently have small tools scattered around the outside on lawn or terrace. Make them all easier to spot by painting the handle of each one with a bright identifying color such as red or yellow. This also makes it easier for borrowing neighbors to remember where they came from.

Sharpen for Safety

Contrary to what some people think, sharp chisels, knives and planes are safer to use than dull ones. Dull tools may slip or gouge the work, and require extra pressure - all of which makes them more hazardous to use. Keep tools sharp by honing edges frequently on an oilstone. Grind them only when the blades have been badly worn or nicked.

Storing Sharp Tools

To preserve the edge on chisels, gouges and other sharp tools build a small rack which holds them vertically with the tips or blades shoved into the top of a slab of synthetic sponge. The soft material will keep the blades from banging against each other, and also keeps the sharp blades covered so there is less danger of the handyman cutting himself.

Screwdriver Care

When a screwdriver blade starts to wear it tends to slip out of the screw slots easily. This makes it difficult to tighten screws securely and chews up the heads of tightly seated screws which must be loosened. To prevent this, the blade tip should be dressed occasionally by stroking with a flat file to eliminate rounded edges and to make the end blunt once more. Be careful to maintain the original bevel of the side faces and file across the tip at right angles so as to keep the blade end square.

Claw Hammers

When the claws on a claw hammer show signs of slipping every time a small-headed nail is pulled, try renewing their grip by filing the notch between them with a triangular file. Use a corner of the file to slightly deepen and sharpen the crevice between the claws. This improves their grip so they will "bite" the nail head more firmly.

Hammer Handles

Hammer handles sometimes work loose because the wood has dried excessively so that slight shrinkage occurs inside the metal socket. To swell the wood back up again and make it tight once more, soak the head end of the handle in a bucket of water for several hours. The handle can be kept from shrinking in the future by sealing the top end where it comes through the head with several coats of varnish or lacquer.

Pliers Care

When pliers accumulate dirt in the serrated teeth on the inside of their jaws they have a tendency to slip and will call for much greater pressure in order to hold. To correct this clean jaws out with solvent and a stiff wire brush, and re-sharpen individual teeth occasionally by dressing lightly with the edge of a three-cornered file.

For Easier Reading

Steel squares and other engraved metal rules often become difficult to read as they get older. For easier reading rub a crayon across the markings. Select one in a contrasting color. Then wipe off with a flat pad of cloth that has been moistened with a little kerosene or turpentine. The color will be wiped off the surface but will remain in the bottom of the grooved markings.

Once your tools are in order, any work you need to do will be so much easier.

The beginner who walks into his garden supply store is going to be overwhelmed at the number and variety of home garden equipment he is going to find on sale. There are literally hundreds of different kinds of pots and trays, dibbles and trowels, hand rakes and sprayers on the market. Almost all of them are useful but only a very few of them are essential.

If you are not scared off by the number of different things available, the tendency is usually to buy more than you need, or at least more than you are sure you need. Too many beginners have let themselves get carried away, only to find later on, to their dismay, that the only uses they could find for the expensive decorative pot they bought was as the base of a home-made lamp or broken up into small pieces for crock material. Don't let it happen to you.

Tools

There is no reason that you can't get along adequately without buying one of the tools listed below. You can use a kitchen fork for a cultivator, and you can use the teapot to water your plants. But these tools have been designed to fulfill the specific functions for which they are made, and as a result they are a good deal more efficient than home-made substitutes. We also believe that in the long run you will be happier with professionally-made tools because they wear better, last longer and make your work easier.

Watering can

Watering cans come in every shape and size imaginable, but without doubt the best kind available on the market today is the type with the long thin spout. It is particularly useful in watering around the base of plants whose foliage should not be wetted, such as the African Violet or Saintpaulia.

Knife

A sharp knife is an essential tool for many of the chores required in the home garden. A pocket knife will do the trick very well.

Pots

House plant pots come in every size and shape imaginable. Basically they can be broken down into two groups: the unglazed red clay pots which are the cheapest and most plentiful of any single type of container made, and glazed decorative plant holders. These pots are made in standard shapes and sizes ranging from 2 inches in diameter to 8 inches and above.

The advantages of the common red clay flowerpot over all other kinds are several: 1) they are inexpensive; 2) they are plentiful and easy to find in any size; 3) their sides are slightly porous enough so to benefit the soil by allowing it to rid itself of excess moisture through the sides, and to breathe.

All red clay pots have a drainage hole at the bottom to let out excess water or to act as an inlet for moisture with those plants which are bottom-watered. The disadvantage with these containers is that many people find them so plain as to be ugly.

Because they are so readily available, and because at first you will probably buy all your plants in adequate pots, there is no need to stock up on extra pots until it comes time for you to do some repotting or until you are ready to try your hand at propagation. At that time you should be able to choose the pots you need without wasteful overbuying. There are no standards for the size and shape of decorative glazed pots.

You can buy them in the same size and shape as clay pots, but they also are made in oblong or upright shapes or made to look like animals, tree trunks or what have you. They are usually more expensive, and often don't have a drainage hole in the bottom, but otherwise are just as good for growing plants as the old-fashioned red clay type.

Copper, and other varieties of metal pots, are also on the market, but these are almost entirely decorative, and are used to house (and disguise) the pot in which the plant is actually grown.

While there are a number of materials on the market these days that you can use for your new kitchen counters, granite and other natural stone materials are some of the most popular things going.

Professional house flippers and those who have the money to remodel their homes are installing granite in their kitchens to make them look more modern and sleek. There are a few things that you need to know about buying granite and having it installed, though, before you run off to the nearest stone outlet to make your purchase.

You need to think about whether purchasing granite for your counters is going to be within your budget range. Granite for a 90 square foot kitchen can cost over $10,000 depending on where you purchase it from, but this is the average cost.

The cost of granite will go up or down depending on what color and pattern that you want. To make the countertops look like one continuous piece of granite after it has been cut, the pattern has to be matched up and so pieces that have non-uniform patterns are going to cost you more than those that are more uniform.

The cost will also go up or down depending on what kind of edge you want on it; if you want a simple square edge, it will be less, but if you want a beveled one, it will be more.

Even though budget slabs of granite can be purchased, you may not be able to get enough of it to use in your entire kitchen. You should also be aware that not all granite is of the same quality.

The labor involved in cutting and installing the granite into your kitchen should be left up to the professionals who are trained to handle this work. This is mainly because if you do it wrong, you will have lost thousands of dollars on a slab of granite.

If you let the professionals do it and they mess up, they are liable for the cost, not you. Unless you really know what you are doing and are confident that you can do this yourself, please let the professionals handle this job.

The granite will also need to be sealed, since it is a natural stone and a porous surface that will stain easily if it is not properly sealed. This will need to be done at least once a year to keep the granite durable and unstained.

Having granite countertops installed in your kitchen and bathroom can add a decent bit of value to the space and it is becoming much more accessible to the average buyer as long as they have enough money to purchase it with.

It is not as expensive as it used to be, but it is still restricted mostly to the middle class. There are a few things that you should know before you go shopping for granite so you know whether it is the right material for you and your home.

Not all neighborhoods warrant the purchase of granite for countertops, so you want to make sure if you are renovating a home for sale that you do not go above and beyond the call of duty anywhere in the house and make sure the renovations are appropriate for the area.

You can actually lose money by adding expensive features to a home in an undesirable neighborhood and you will likely not be able to get your desired asking price.

As for the expense of granite, 90 square feet of it will cost over $10,000 and this is the average amount of countertop space. Factor more or less money than this into your budget to make sure you can afford this material for your home.

You should remember that granite is a naturally occurring material and it is porous. It will absorb liquids and food colors easily if it is not sealed correctly and at least once a year, if not twice.

They require cleaning every day and you should not allow foods that stain surfaces easily like red wine be spilled on them and left there.

Go shopping for granite at least two or three different stores and get a quote on both the slab you want and the labor required to cut it and install it. Some stores will offer remnant pieces if you ask about them and they sometimes will give them to you and charge you only for the labor necessary to get them installed if you are lucky.

Whatever you do, do not purchase granite or any other natural stone online, since you may not be getting what you are purchasing.

The only thing about granite and other natural stone is the pattern and color you want for your home may not be readily available, especially if you want to try and purchase a remnant piece. If you cannot find the right piece of granite, consider other natural or engineered stones.

For busy gardeners, buying a Green House Kit offers one compelling advantage: Everything you need to build your greenhouse down to the last nut and bolt and delivered right to your door. Besides shopping convenience, a ready-to-assemble green house kit removes the guesswork, a big plus if you're a first-time greenhouse owner.

Most kit greenhouses can be assembled by two people in two days or less. You will first have to build a foundation and make utility arrangements: electrical, water, etc..

Sometimes it's advantageous to buy your kit from a greenhouse supplier who also offers a line of high-quality accessories, such as shelving, lighting and irrigation systems. It's always tempting to purchase general purpose accessories from a discount store. Sometimes these discount solutions will do the trick. But it's worth pointing out that greenhouse equipment is specially designed to survive dirt, insects, extreme heat and moisture, and to fit without damaging the greenhouse or voiding its warranty.

POPULAR GREENHOUSE MODELS

When you begin researching before buying a green house kit, you'll quickly discover that there are many options available. You'll find both attached and freestanding models, and in a wide variety of sizes and construction styles. You'll find curved and straight eaves, roof, side and end vents, and various gutter drainage systems. Framing materials include wood, PVC, and various gauges of aluminum and steel frames. Coverings include tempered glass, double-or triple-wall rigid plastic panels, and clear plastic sheeting.

Analyze many models, keeping your goals (and, of course, your budget) in mind.

It's a good idea to make sure that the green house kit you have your eye on will expand to accommodate your future needs. Many greenhouse owners find that they need to expand their square footage almost immediately. Once you actually begin using the greenhouse, you'll discover a whole new world of possibilities.

HOW TO EVALUATE GREEN HOUSE KITS

Consider both greenhouse kit cost and ease of assembly. Complex, ornate designs will generally be more expensive and more time-consuming to assemble. But generally, the more expensive the design, the more complete the kit will be.

Simpler, less expensive kits sometimes require additional purchases.

If your kit doesn't include everything you need to build a green house, determine what else you may need to purchase, and consider the degree of assembly complexity this introduces into the equation. In many high-end kits, all structured components are pre-drilled, all panels are cut to fit. In less expensive kits, you may find yourself cutting panels and drilling holes.

Calculate the true cost of your greenhouse. To the kit price, add shipping, taxes, the cost of the foundation, utility connections, and labor cost, if any. If possible, read the assembly manual online before you purchase to see whether you possess the necessary level of skill required. If it looks like you'll need help, be sure to budget labor cost.

When the kit arrives, unpack the pieces carefully, and count everything immediately to make sure you received exactly what you were supposed to.Contact your supplier immediately if any pieces are missing. You don't want missing pieces to hold up your assembly process.

Study the plans thoroughly before beginning assembly. Building a green house kit is similar to working a jigsaw puzzle. Every piece is designed to fit hand in glove. Don't skip steps! Most greenhouses will last for many years if properly assembled and properly maintained.

To select the type of wood best suited to the work to be done it is essential to understand the characteristics of the material.

Structure of wood

Wood is derived from a tree. It is made up of bundles of fibers or long tubes that run parallel to the stem of the tree. These are crossed by other fibers that form the medullary or wood rays. These wood rays pass from the center or pith to the bark and serve to bind the units together. Concentric rings are formed as a layer of wood is added each year. These are called annual rings.

Sections of a tree trunk

Medulla, or pith: This is the center of the tree. It is lighter in color and less strong than the heartwood.

Heartwood: This section of the trunk, located between the medulla and the sap-wood, gives us the best building material. Sapwood: The recent annual rings are contained here, between the heartwood and the cambium.

Cambium: This is the most recent annual ring. Bark: This external layer protects the tree.

Sawing the tree into planks

A tree is usually cut during the winter, when there is little sap in the wood. At this time the wood is less subject to fungus attack. After the bark has been stripped, the trunk is washed to prevent fungus, mold, or other growth. This process also helps to season wood.

At the end of the seasoning period the trunk may be sawed into planks in any of a number of different ways. One of the most practical methods is sawing parallel to the grain. This is called plain, or bastard, sawing. Quarter sawing, another method, is used for higher quality work.

Wood Changes

Planks undergo both warping and shrinking during the seasoning process. Shrinking is most noticeable at the outer edges of the plank, because the annual rings of the sap-wood are fresher and less dense. Warping refers to the general change the plank undergoes after being cut.

Seasoning of Lumber

It is essential that lumber be well seasoned before it is used. The usual methods are as follows:

Natural seasoning: In this method sawed lumber is exposed to free air after it has been carefully stacked.

Water seasoning: A somewhat quicker method of seasoning consists of immersing the lumber in running water for about one month. The water entering the pores of the wood washes out the sap. The lumber is dried in the open air.

Artificial seasoning: In this method the lumber is placed in a drying kiln, and a current of hot air is allowed to circulate continuously between the layers. For some woods steam may be used. This is the fastest method.

Selecting and Buying Wood

After the design has been selected and studied, the next step is the ordering of material. One method is to buy the lumber in standard lengths and cut the required pieces as listed. Another method is to ask the lumber dealer to cut the material into the sizes you need. There will be a minimum of waste whichever method is used, because standard lumber sizes have been considered in the planning of the designs.

Avoid using solid wood and plywood together in the same piece of furniture, particularly if a flush board is to be visible. If such a combination of materials is unavoidable, glue should never be used for bonding the parts. Plywood and solid wood react differently to drying glue and to atmospheric conditions, but screws or loose joints will permit shrinkage or expansion.

Another point to keep in mind is that both soft and hard wood shrink in the process of seasoning. Thus the wood is usually 3/4 in. narrower than the nominal thickness. This difference is of consequence only in fitting such parts as doors, shelves, or drawers. If the wood is of a different thickness from that specified in the design, adjustments must be made in the dimensions of the part to be applied. Therefore it is best to secure lumber of a thickness as close as possible to that specified.

Now you know something about wood, it is time to start on your construction.

Most people who own an older home would love to be able to renovate the kitchen and one of the most important decisions in this process will be what your new countertops will be made of.

There are a lot of options for you to choose from, but the material that is being pushed the most by home improvement networks recently has been natural stone such as marble and granite. This gives your kitchen a sleek and modern appearance, but it can get to be pretty pricy.

Stone like granite is expensive and can end up running you up over $10,000 for 90 square feet of counter space. If you choose to have natural stone put in your kitchen, please leave it to the professionals to cut the slab and install it for you.

This is the best way to make sure that your money is not wasted by a simple mistake. You can only cut the granite one time; it cannot be undone. Also, consider having under-mounted sinks installed instead of over-mounted sinks because it tends to look better and it is much easier to keep clean.

Food cannot be caught between the sink and the granite and excess food and liquid can be just swept into it if necessary.

If you decide on granite or another natural stone for your kitchen, go and look at the actual piece that you are going to be purchasing before deciding what you want. Never purchase it online or without you or someone that you trust seeing it first.

One of the downfalls of granite and other natural stones is the fact that they are porous surfaces and need to be sealed before installation and then re-sealed at least once a year after installation to retain their beauty and durability.

If they are not sealed, they will stain quickly and even if you do seal them, you still have to keep them clean.

Another bad thing about granite if you are big on customization is the fact that it comes in a limited amount of colors and patterns. There are materials that you can choose to use in your kitchen if you want a large level of customization, but granite is not one of these.

Consider installing ceramic tile or even concrete for your counters if you want the kitchen to be more open for customization. Laminate can be used, but this is not a solid surface and it scratches and chips easily, so steer away from it, if you can.

If you want to remodel your kitchen to bring the value of your home up, there are a few different materials that you can use to do this. One of the most popular materials that is being used right now and pushed by major home television networks like HGTV and Discovery Home is granite.

Granite is an expensive, naturally occurring stone that can be cut to the shape that you need for your kitchen counters. These counters will add more value to your kitchen than most of the other countertop materials that you could choose and gives the kitchen a pleasing aesthetic feel to it.

One of the downsides of granite, though, as mentioned before, is that it is expensive. It can cost you thousands of dollars to have granite countertops installed in your kitchen or almost any other natural stone, such as slate or marble. It can cost anywhere between $40 to $120 a square foot.

Natural stone kitchen counters will also have to be sealed before you can use them, due to the risk of them staining from the food that you will be putting on them. It is recommended that you re-seal the granite every six months or at least every year, but this is not very difficult to do.

If you spill anything on a light colored granite, you need to clean it up as quickly as you can. Even though the sealant is in place, the stone can still absorb stains if you leave the liquid or food on it long enough.

Another drawback of granite is the fact that it is available in limited colors and patterns. Since it is a natural stone, you probably will not find it in the exact shade or tint that you may be looking for and even if you do, it may not be the pattern that you desire.

If you want to be able to customize your counters a little more than this, you may want to go with concrete or ceramic tile, depending on the look that you want.

If you can, go and look at the actual slab of granite that you are going to buy and never purchase granite online. You can often find what are called remnant pieces of granite that have been left over from other jobs. Some places will not charge you for the granite, only for the labor if you choose to use these leftovers.
