Heirloom Roses Overview - What Are Antique Roses

Centuries ago, William Shakespeare's Juliet said, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet." Perhaps the saying is not as true as we would think. As modern rose gardening developed, so did the hybridizing of rose varieties. Encouraged to produce hardier specimens with larger blooms and heavier producing plants, rose growers cross-pollinated their specimens. The results are the hybrid tea roses and floribunda roses so popular and prevalent in today's gardens. The heirloom rose, however, is poised for a comeback.

Heirloom roses, also known as antique roses, are defined as a variety of rose that is at least one hundred years old. These specimens have been carefully cultivated through the years so that plants can still be produced from their seeds. Though the number of actual varieties is hard to pinpoint, they fall into several categories. These Antique varieties are the Gallicas, the damasks, the albas, the centifolia and the moss. They are all prized for their heady fragrance and their large, beautiful blooms. Although modern growers have created hybrid roses as a kind of evolution, these antique varieties are as simple to grow as the hybrid tea and the floribunda.

Heirloom rose websites are abundant and your local garden center may even stock some antique varieties. Your local garden club or horticultural society may be an invaluable resource in finding the types that are most well suited to your climate and soil.

The same principles of rose gardening apply, whether you choose an heirloom variety or its descendants, but you may want to add some period flavor to your heirloom garden in the form of a Victorian gazing ball. You could also spice up a brand new gazebo with a lovely antique climbing variety.

Remember some basic rose care is always in order, so be sure to water at the base of the plants only. Leaves, stems and flowers should be avoided. This will help keep mold and rust away, which can damage your delicate plantings. Always keep the roots of your plants free of debris including fallen leaves, and practice careful and thoughtful pruning. Early spring pruning will ensure a healthy, productive plant throughout the summer season. Prune using a good quality shear and heavy gloves to protect your hands from thorns, paying careful attention to the center of the plant to increase the amount of air that can circulate through the plant later in the season.

You should aim to remove all dead wood, weak growth and old canes. Cutting to a standard height, depending on your particular variety will produce a strong, flowering plant. Be sure, also to clean your pruning shears with rubbing alcohol after each use to prevent mold or fungus from invading your plants.

With so many heirloom varieties to choose from, your garden will be a spectacular display of blooms throughout the season. You will also have the satisfaction of keeping the tradition of heirloom roses alive in your own landscape.

Ideas for Your Home Remodeling Project

A homeowner will gain ideas for home remodeling from people that they know personally and professionally. Many people will be remodeling several rooms at home and will comment about the progress that has been made from week to week and homeowners that want to do the same home remodeling project will usually listen very carefully to all that is said. Good comments about a certain contractor might be enough to convince a homeowner to hire them to do their project.

Some home remodeling ideas might come from the next door neighbor. This homeowner might have had contractors coming and going from the residence for several weeks. There will be noticeable differences in the exterior features of the home and the man next door might want to follow suit and apply those features in a small way to their home. The ideas for remodeling the home might not be original but will help the home blend in with the neighborhood better.

A center that sells building supplies is staffed with many people that specialize in many areas of home remodeling. A homeowner might get a lot of ideas from the various displays that are located in various areas of the store. Some of the displays might offer ideas on the various textures that are available for resurfacing walls, and others will have a varied amount of tile in many styles and materials that will certainly give a homeowner an idea of how these products would look once they were installed in their own residence.

A health club might give a homeowner an idea for creating a luxurious retreat in their home. They will begin considering the home remodeling projects that could turn their bathroom into a spa experience that entails using whirlpool spas in one section and the installation of a steam sauna in another. The homeowner might discover other ways to build a luxurious shower that mimics the showers at the health club that surround each bather with water sprays from every angle.

For a kitchen remodeling project, the ideas might come from the people that spend the most time in the space. A cook is certainly going to expound a great deal of information about the type of home appliances that would work best for the cooking style that is done most. For some cooks, this type of appliance might require remodeling the exhaust systems to allow charcoal grills to be used indoors. A dream of many homeowners is completely remodeling the kitchen. They get ideas from the home remodeling shows on the family television.

Some homeowners get remodeling projects for the yard from parks and recreation areas that are located near their homes. They can see the long term effects of sculpting flower beds and removing weeds from the land. They can monitor the success rate for the plants growing in soil that was boosted by peat moss and those growing from pots or those that rely on only the good Earth to receive their nourishment. They can do some homework on landscaping at the local library and learn the best way to use plants to achieve a totally different look for the home with the careful placement of trees and other shrubs.

Furniture Makeovers Save Homeowners Time And Money

There are many unique and clever ways that old furniture can be resurrected and turned into useful furniture that can be enjoyed everyday by the entire family. The furniture makeover approach to discovering new furniture options will end up saving a homeowner a considerable amount of time and money because buying fine furniture can be quite expensive at times.

The materials that can be used in the makeover process of old furniture can come from other styles of furniture that a person finds at a yard sale or those found in the attic of a home and have no useful purpose at all and are simply taking up storage space that could make the home seem more livable and spacious. Home building materials can be fashioned into fine furniture in several hours if the homeowner is crafty with a saw and a hammer.

There are many reasons why people choose to makeover furniture instead of buying new furniture at a fine furniture department store. Some people get quite attached to furniture that they grew up with such as beds and dressers but do to size requirements they are not able to use them anymore. With the application of stripper to remove old varnishes and paint, an old dresser can be converted into a bathroom lavatory with the application of a new stain and a coat of varnish.

People can fashion headboards for use in the bedroom that are made from old pieces of plywood. These furniture pieces can be covered with a variety of colorful fabrics and cut to fit any style of furniture that a bedroom might need. At a later date, these headboards can be converted to art furnishings for a wall in the family game room or be used in other makeover projects that routinely happen throughout the home.

Many furniture items simply need a coat of paint to take on a new character that is rugged and refreshing. Some large pieces of furniture can become centerpieces for large walls in the home and the home will take on a totally different look in a short amount of time. The home interior will be very pleasing to the eye and comfortable after a furniture makeover because the blank space against an offending wall has been filled with beautiful furniture that did not cost much at all to makeover.

With proper care, fine furniture can last a long time. People that are interested in recycling efforts are typical makeover enthusiasts that believe in using furniture woods over and over again. In olden times, furniture craftsmen practiced furniture makeovers because supplies of wood were very limited or hard to come by due to the distances involved between settlements. Furniture makeovers are considered quite fashionable and a good alternative to using natural resources when the same resources are already available to them.

Practical Tips On Caring For Your Flower

Flowers can uplift our spirits and enliven any dampened spirit. They can bring a smile to any sad face and can definitely symbolize or express one's love for another. The presence of flowers not only brightens and adds color to a room but it also conveys strong feelings of emotion. Flowers make impressive gifts for any occasion whether it is Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, a birthday, anniversary or even if there is no particular occasion.

You may be a recipient of a bouquet of flowers and as you appreciate the thoughtful gesture as well as enjoy its beautiful sight, you want the flowers to last longer. If the flowers were purchased somewhere else and was basically shipped and delivered to you, it is very important that someone will be able to wait for it when it will be delivered. If the delivered flowers were made to wait on the porch or mail under the scorching heat of the sun all afternoon until someone comes home at around 5 or 6 pm, you have already taken days off their lifespan as most flowers are shipped without water to sustain them.

There are actually several tips to help cut flowers thrive and to extend their shelf life. If the cut flowers have been out of water even for just any time length, submerge them first for about 30 minutes in a bath before putting them in a vase. Cut off about 3 or 4 inches from the stem and place them in a vase of clean water. Ensure that the vase is clean and the water inside the vase is clean. The vase should have enough water to enable the flowers to hydrate themselves. Mist them with the use of a spray bottle around two times a day. Change the water in the vase every 2nd or 3rd day and trim the ends of the stem.

If you happen to have flowers that are starting to wilt, you can actually revive them with a warm bath. You start by filling a sink or any container for that matter with warm water. Make sure that the water's temperature should be about the same as a relaxing hot bath. Anything hotter will shock your flowers and will end up killing them. Remove the flowers from the vase or the flower foam and submerge them fully into the warm water. Use a sharp knife to groom once again the stems by cutting diagonally of about an inch from the stem's end. Allow the flowers to soak for about 5 minutes to half an hour. Check the flower's firmness and if they have been rehydrated you can return them to their vases or flower foam. Of course this technique will not work if the flower has lived passed its vase life.

How to Stop Copper Corrosion and Pinhole Leaks

According to some estimates, corrosion costs the United States more than $1 billion every year. Besides actual piping failure and pinhole leaks, copper corrosion leaves blue stains on sinks, tubs, fixtures, laundry and hair.

Corrosion can also make the water unfit for drinking. Copper can be toxic and water containing levels over 1.0 mg/L should not be used for drinking.

The main causes of copper corrosion are:

Low pH (acid water less than 7.0) or high pH (alkaline water greater than 8.5)

High levels of dissolved oxygen

High levels of salts dissolved in the water (total dissolved solids)

Corrosion-causing bacteria such as sulfate or iron bacteria

Electrochemical causes, such as improper grounding of electrical appliances to the copper piping, and/or lightening strikes through utility poles grounding wires

High velocity of water, relative to size of piping, causing hydraulic wear on the piping, sometimes found in circulating hot water systems using pumps

Sand, sediment or other grit in the water causing hydraulic wear on the piping

Improper installation of copper piping, and in particular the failure to properly de-burr or ream the ends of the pipe and/or the installer using excessive acid flux when soldering the pipes.

Once corrosion starts in a copper piping system, electrons can begin to flow between the corrosion sites in the pipe, causing the copper to dissolve into the water. Since water contains oxygen, the copper ions rust or oxidize, to blue color. This same process happens in galvanized iron piping, causing rust stains and red water.

What can be done?

1. Identify the source and severity of the problem by inspection of the piping system and getting an accurate water analysis especially if you are on well water.

2. Check to see if there are unnecessary electrical appliances or wiring connected to the piping and if the piping system is properly grounded to an earth ground. Verify to make sure that there is electrical continuity through out the piping system. For instance, the copper piping should not be separated electrically by plastic water filters, sections of plastic pipe, plastic water softener bypass valves etc. Jumper cables can be installed around these items.

3. Check for pH and see if the water is corrosive

4. Cut out sections of the copper piping, cut in half and inspect to the type of corrosion present and for signs of poor workmanship by the installers. Replace copper pipe if necessary.

5. Install a calcite neutralizer tank, or a soda ash feeder to raise the pH to 7.2 to 8.0 to correct for low pH and increase the alkalinity in the water.

6. Install a phosphate feeder before the copper piping. Phosphate will coat the piping and reduce or slow down the corrosion effects, by coating the interior surfaces of the piping with phosphate and causing an insulation surface to be built up.

7. In case of high total dissolved solids (over 1000 ppm) install a whole house reverse osmosis system, followed by a calcite neutralizer.

8. If your water has bacteria and/or sulfur odors, install a chlorinator or ozone system to disinfect the water before it enters the home.

If your water is supplied to you by a municipal utility then the first place to start is by calling your water utility and reporting the problem. If this is an isolated case and none of your neighbors are having a corrosion problem you should suspect that the cause is either improper grounding, stray currents, or improper installation of the copper pipe.

If you take your water from a private well then the first task you should do is to get an accurate water analysis. The water analysis should be for pH, total hardness, alkalinity, total dissolved solids, iron, manganese, nitrate, chloride, sulfate, and copper.

Why Utah Doors Are In

In the real estate market, which is so volatile and constantly changing, it is very important to keep yourself up to date on the latest trends to get your home to sell in a timely fashion, for the price you want to sell it for. In considering this topic, we cannot help but speak about curb appeal. And when you talk about curb appeal, there is absolutely one aspect of a house that you cannot ignore. That would be the entry point. The door! A great looking door can give a great first impression when walking into a home. So pay attention as we attempt to cover several points you should look for when putting in a brand new door to your home.

First, what is fashionable? Check out the local trends from houses that have recently sold. What kind of front doors were on the house? If it's a fad, that is great because you are looking to sell your home soon, so hope on board with what is already popular and install that door.

The next attribute that the front door carries, is that of protection. When a person goes to lock their front door at night time to keep people out, is that door going to do the job? Bet you didn't know that much thought actually went into the purchasing of a front door huh? Well it does. So make sure that you choose a door that is very sturdy. It doesn't have to be 3 feet thick, and made of steel. Just make sure that you apply the appropriate locking system. It should be something that makes the home owner feel safe at night.

How much do they cost? Well, a good solid oak door with nice carvings on it can cost as much as three thousand dollars. You may think that is a lot of money, but don't worry, you are simply building equity in the house. You will get it all back. In Utah, there are several trends happening with front door design. It would be a good idea to check out some of their innovative choices when considering what you will do with yours.

Where can you get a Utah door? Well there are a few places that you can check out. First, go to your local Lowes. They are bound to have a great selection of front doors to choose from. If they do not have the one that you like, then check out home depot as they would most likely not only have a great selection of front doors for you to choose from, but they might even have a craftsman available who is willing to make a custom front door for you.

If both of the above attempts leave you hanging, then go to the internet. Simply do a Google search for "Utah Front Doors" or some phrase that closely resembles it and you'll find a great selection of front door installation companies who are well equipped to help you make an informed decision about which door to install, and hopefully at an affordable price.

Use A Southwest Table Runner For Wonderful Rustic Style Home Decor

A Southwest table runner is an excellent way to bring out that unique western, rustic or Native American feel in your home decorating. Because of their wide versatility, more and more designers are choosing to buy their southwest table runner online. Used as western accents and also southwestern accessories, in different rooms or when decorating a cabin or log home with a rustic or western theme, southwestern table runners give your home character and a beautiful authentic Native American look. When looking for American Indian style table runners, you will find a large selection making it easy to use a western table runner and you will no doubt want to put a few of the most popular and sought-after runners or table rugs in your home decor. These table runners have a rich history that has grown over time and can truly be appreciated as great works of art.

Some of the most popular southwestern and western table runners, in American Indain patterns, each type of runner combines unique colors and characters, symbolizing spirituality or depictions of historical events and a wide variety of colors and designs.

Not only is a southwest table runner known for its great beauty, but the skill and hard work needed in making Native table runners is also greatly appreciated. The makers of hand woven table runners are highly skilled and start the runner making process by kneeling in front of a vertical wooden-framed loom. The designs are then placed by using a shuttle to weave a variety of colored yarn together, making geometric characters and designs. Originally, Navajo rugs as well as those of some other Southwest Indian tribes were weaved of hand spun cotton thread. However, once the wool of domestic sheep was introduced to the region by the Spanish settlers, the people mainly used wool to weave their colorful rugs, table runners and other traditional weaving.

Today, many of the modern southwest table runners are woven in areas where Spanish and Native American histories have melded together to create unique designs. Southwestern table runners, with their warm earth tone colors and traditional southwestern designs make them perfect for rustic home decorating. If you are looking for great southwestern decor, you will likely purchase from American companies or directly from Native American weavers. Purchasing western table runners from Navajo or other American Indian tribes not only allows you the satisfaction of knowing that you have a southwest table runner that is made by Native Americans but also helps to support the Native American heritage of rug making, and the people who themselves sell their rugs, runners, and Native American art.

The style of table runner you choose will strongly depend on what your tastes are and what kind of decorating you decide on. You will find that a southwest table runner is an excellent southwestern accent when combined with rustic or western home furnishings. Whether you are changing your home decor or decorating a whole house using a rustic theme, you will come across many designs and colors available to choose from. Among these options you will find everything from Zapotec runners with no two alike, to southwest table runners with southwestern style. Home decorators love hand woven wool table runners because of the rich colors and textures. Whatever your decorating style and whatever your home decor needs, you will greatly enjoy the richness of color and warmth brought to life in your home by decorating with a southwest table runner.

How To Organize A Closet That You Share With Your Significant Other

When two people share a closet without any thought to their mutual satisfaction with the arrangement, it is trouble waiting to happen. Invariably, one person is more particular about the way the closet is kept. This sometimes leads to very heated arguments. It is far better to find a way to agree on your closet arrangements from the start. There are seven steps you can take to make a closet for two more harmonious.

1. Discuss with your partner your closet needs. Before you even begin to set up the closet, or to reorganize it, it is imperative that you know what your partner needs. You might be one who thinks you can figure it out for yourself. Do not be fooled. Your partner will eventually want to have some say about how he or she wants things put away.

2. Organize the closet together. You may say to your partner, "You do it; I don't care how it's done." You are putting a tremendous burden on him or her to do it in a way you can accept. Although you may say you do not care, chances are when you cannot find your best boots, you will wish you had had a say. Be willing to give your input and accept that of your partner's.

3. Make sure there is room for both people's things. Often one person will crowd the other out because that person has a large supply of clothing and accessories. Just because your partner has fewer things, it does not follow that they should not have the room required for those items. Be fair, and make sure there is room for expansion for both of you.

4. Label storage devices. It may be obvious that a shoe tree is for footwear, but for whose footwear? Make that clear by putting a label on the shoe tree. Likewise, label shelves, baskets, and hooks. You should not have to label the bars, unless you have such a large closet that it gets confusing.

5. Keep each person's items separate as much as possible. It is easier to find your clothes when you are not looking through shelves or racks of another person's clothes. You may have to put all the long hanging clothes together, but even then, you can put one person's on the left and the other person's on the right.

6. Make storage equipment easy for each person to use. This gets down to the individual needs of each person. If one of the partners if very short, it is not fair to put their clothes on high shelves when there is another solution. When one person has back problems it helps to use the double bar that is easier for them to reach, such as a high bar for a tall person.

7. Reorganize once a month. Make it a chore you do together. You can find any problems with your system while you catch any misplaced articles. If you keep the closet in order, you will not have to do a major organization as often.

How to Treat Iron Bacteria in Home Well and Tap Water

Iron bacteria consume iron to survive and in the process metabolize the iron into a protective slime layer around the cells, making them very resistant to elimination. Iron bacteria do not cause health problems but do leave a reddish brown or yellow slime that can clog plumbing and foul water softeners and iron filters.

You may notice this brown or rust colored stringy-appearing slime in your toilet tank when you remove the lid. In addition to causing plumbing and fixture problems iron bacteria clog well screens and reduce well yields. Iron bacteria can produce odors that may resemble fuel oil, cucumber, or sewage. These odors may be noticeable only in the morning or after periods when the water has not been used. Iron bacteria can co-exist with various species of sulfur bacteria which can give off a rotten-egg odor.

Treating Iron Bacteria by Shock Chlorination

Even though chlorine is a powerful disinfectant, iron bacteria can build up a thick slime that keeps the disinfectant from penetrating beyond the surface cells. In addition, iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide gas that are often present in well water can absorb much of the chlorine before it has a chance to reach the bacterial cells. Because chemical reactions are slowed at the cool temperatures common in wells, bacterial cells need a long exposure for chlorine or other disinfectants to be effective. Even if chlorine kills all the bacterial cells in the water, those in the groundwater can be drawn in by pumping or drift back into the well.

Because of these factors, thoroughly treating an iron bacteria infestation requires more than simply dumping bleach into the well. The following steps are recommended:

Approximately 8 quarts of 5.25% household chlorine bleach should be mixed with 100 gals. of water. The goal is to prepare an amount more than the amount of water standing in the well, and so the 100-gallon measure is a safe estimate if this is not known. You can mix this water in several clean trash containers.

Pour or pump the solution into the well. Attach a hose to an outside hose bib or faucet and place the other end of the hose into the well. Open the faucet and circulate the water for at least one hour washing down the inside of the casing and the pump piping. Faucets in your house should be opened until you detect a chlorine smell, and then close them.

Allow the chlorine solution to remain in the well and piping for at least 24 hours, before purging the system free of the chlorine. If you have a chlorine test kit, make sure there is at least 10 ppm of chlorine left in the well water after the 24 hours. If you detect a chlorine residual less than 10 ppm, repeat the entire shock chlorination process if possible.

Run the chlorinated water outdoors on a field or ditch since it can have a negative effect on septic tanks. It may also kill grass and shrubs, and under no circumstances should be run into a pond or stream.

Well owners may need to repeat this process more than once in order to rid the system entirely of the iron bacteria.

Prevent Iron Bacteria Infestations

When a new well is drilled, or when an existing well pump is repaired, soil containing bacteria can be introduced into the groundwater from pipes or pumps that were laid on the ground. Surface water used as drilling water may also infect the well with iron bacteria.

An improperly constructed or maintained well can be contaminated by surface water leaking into the well. In some cases floods will force surface water into the well and cause contamination. Poorly maintained or defective septic systems, barn or cattle areas, and other sources of contamination may allow water containing bacteria to penetrate the well through open cracks in the bedrock.

Although these sources may cause more serious water quality problems which could cause disease (such as e.coli bacteria, parasites and viruses) they could also be sources of iron bacteria in a well.

Well Chlorinators

In many cases the iron bacteria are not eliminated despite repeated attempts to sanitize the well and plumbing. At this point a permanent and on-going disinfection system may be employed.

Chlorine is the most common disinfectant used in home water well systems, but hydrogen peroxide and ozone are also highly effective against iron bacteria. If the well is losing production due to iron bacteria slime and build-up a chlorine pellet feeder that dispenses chlorine pellets down the well may be the best solution.

The chlorination, peroxide or ozone injection system is typically installed after the well but before the water enters the household piping in order to disinfect the water of iron bacteria. A large enough contact tank must be employed in order for the water to be thoroughly disinfected after injecting the disinfectant.

Proper Deck Cleaning and Sealing

Having your deck properly cleaned and sealed is essential to its longevity. Cleaning and sealing a deck should not be a one time thing; it needs to be done every couple of years. Most professional deck cleaning companies will offer a deck maintenance program so that your wood deck looks good all the time and lasts for years to come. In this article we will answer some common questions home owners have pertaining to deck maintenance.

How soon can I have my new deck cleaned and sealed? Many people have heard that you should let your deck "dry out" for a year prior to cleaning and sealing it. This is a myth and the truth be told, most of the damage is done to your deck in the first 6 months or so.

After 12 months the wood can be split and cracked from water damage and will have turned gray from the suns damaging UV rays. At this point it isn't too late to have it cleaned and protected but the sooner the better.

A professional deck restoration company can take moisture readings in the wood and let you know for sure when your deck is ready to be sealed. Usually within 1-3 months, depending on the climate and location of the deck, it will be ready for a proper cleaning and some deck sealer.

Is it possible to restore a deck that has aged? Depending on the situation an older deck can be brought back to life. As long as the boards aren't too warped or rotted, getting rid of all the gray dead wood fibers is not a problem. Some sanding may be necessary before it is sealed and your deck contractor may offer those services also.

Even if there is some structural damage a deck contractor could probably do some repairs for you before having it cleaned and sealed. A quality deck cleaning contractor should be able to make an assessment of your deck before attempting to restore it, that way you know what to expect.

Can I clean and seal my own deck? It is possible for a do-it-yourselfer to restore their own deck but I recommend they have some knowledge of the chemicals used and experience in using a pressure washing unit. Wood is actually very soft and when hit with too much water pressure it can easily be marked and scarred. Some people don't realize all the skill and know how that is essential in restoring a deck properly and will sometimes get a friend are family member to do it for them.

Again I don't recommend letting anyone lacking the experience to touch your deck. When a wooden deck is cleaned and sealed improperly it will only cost you more money to have it fixed and done right the next time.

Can I just seal my deck without washing it? The answer to this question is NO, not if you want the sealer to penetrate properly and last. The number one reason a sealer fails is because the wood was not prepared properly. Even a very expensive sealer is not going to do its job unless the wood has been prepped correctly.

Special chemicals need to be used to remove dead fibers, dirt, mildew and other pollutants and it all has to be cleaned using low water pressure so the wood isn't damaged. In some cases a deck sealer stripper is used to remove an old failing sealer, it is important to remove all traces of old sealers so the new sealer can adhere to the wood.

More times than not, most sealers will not adhere to each other and some sealers won't even adhere to itself after a certain amount of time. Contractors using the proper stripping technique will depend heavily on their chemicals to do the work so the right amount of low pressure can be used.

After the cleaning or stripping process a neutralizing step is then needed. The reason for this is because the cleaner or stripper used is considered a caustic and will leave the wood with a high PH level. Deck sealer does not adhere well or properly in this situation. A neutralizer is sprayed on the wood to lower the PH and leave the wood more acidic so the sealer will protect and last a couple years like expected.

Deck restoration and maintenance is a wonderful service when done right, it saves you money by protecting your added living space. Please understand that not all deck cleaning companies have the proper knowledge, just like any industry there are the unethical companies out there just trying to make a buck, so be sure to ask the contractor what his methods and techniques are so you can get the service you expect.

Buying A New Home Often Requires Minimal Remodeling Repairs

A home might seem structurally sound if a visual inspection was done before the home was purchased, but there are many home remodeling repairs that might have defects that will not show up for years. Homeowners are finding their dreams destroyed when they begin to notice small cracks in the ceilings and walls, and this type of damage might require replacement of the interior walls of the home.

Home remodeling repairs that are small will have very little effect to the structural integrity of a home but they can still affect the value of the home. A homeowner might install a new bathroom sink and find that insufficient caulking around the outer edges has caused the sink to leak. This type of home repair can cause additional damage to the underlying cabinetry and some homeowners ignore these leaks until the cabinets begin to show water damage with swollen planks and uneven edges.

Some home remodeling repairs will be made to the surface of hardwood floors. The homeowner might have wanted to completely resurface the wood but to save funds, the homeowner chooses a cheaper route by adding stains and a varnish that turned out later to be water soluble and was marred each time the homeowner mopped the floor or exposed it to any type of water. Replacing hardwood floors can be an expensive task but if the correct resurfacing methods are used, the home remodeling project would last for years.

The cost of making home repairs can be reduced significantly if routine maintenance tasks are performed on machinery and household appliances. The heating and air conditioning system might last many years past its life expectancy guidelines if the homeowner replaced air filters each month and scheduled a seasonal check of all moving parts with a certified technician. Otherwise, the homeowner may have no choice but to initiate some large-scale repairs that will be quite expensive.

Water leaks from faulty plumbing fixtures might motivate the homeowner into completing home remodeling repairs to several levels of the home. Searching for the leak might require a homeowner to dig up the front yard, or climb under a porch. The search for the leak might require several holes to be cut in several interior walls and this type of adventure will cause home remodeling repairs to occur that can accrue a lot of remodeling before the leak is found and repaired.

Home remodeling repairs can be simplified if the homeowner is knowledgeable about the techniques used to repair various things. Home remodeling repairs can be accomplished faster if the homeowner has the tools necessary to remove valves, and tighten nuts and bolts on heating and air conditioning units outside. Home remodeling repairs can be simpler if the homeowner knows where to find inexpensive replacement parts for toilets or creates a list that will list all of the model numbers for motors inside the home.

All this information will prove useful one day or the homeowner can continue to ignore things when they break down and home remodeling repair can escalate into an outage of bathroom services that will inconvenience everyone in the house before repairs are finished.

How To Improve Your Home's Look and Value With Your Cabinets and Countertops

This article is dedicated to giving little tidbits of information about how to improve your biggest investment - your home! We'll look at how you add value to your house without breaking the bank and point you to valuable resources that will give you the really solid 'how to' information about updating and remodeling your home.

The first place you want to look if you're going to improve the value of your home is your kitchens and bathrooms. These areas of the home are said to be the place where you get the most bang for your home improvement buck. I'd like to help you understand not just how to improve your kitchens and bathrooms, but how to do it yourself without overspending.

The first thing you have to talk about when it comes to improving the look and value of your kitchen is the counter tops. I know the stock answer - GRANITE. Is granite the best way to add value to your kitchen and home? The answer has to be a big maybe. Granite may or may not build the value additional value into your home. It really depends on your neighborhood and the style trends in the area you live.

Why are people so in love with granite? Partly because it just feels expensive and high quality. Standard formica or particle board laminate counter tops can feel and look cheap if they're not done well. Granite can give the entire kitchen an air of class and 'expensiveness' (yes I know that's not a word). My recommendation before you go out and spend $5,000 t $10,000 on granite counter tops is to look at your neighbors' kitchens. If they all have granite, you may want to consider making the investment. If they don't have granite, it might not be worth the cost from an investment perspective.

More on your counter tops. You'll want to consider the less expensive alternatives, such as solid surface (or Corian) and formica.

Corian is basically a synthetic imitation of granite, and it can be a very attractive, low cost option for those of you who'd rather spend $3,000 than $6,000 for very similar-looking kitchen surfaces. Although you can tell the difference between granite and Corian, the only thing you're really losing out on is the snob factor. A nice Corian in attractive colors will impress your guests every bit as much as the granite. Except it costs about half as much. Not a bad deal right?

The last type of countertop worth mentioning is formica. Trust me, not all formica is created equal. Just because formica is the least expensive option doesn't mean it needs to be the ugliest. A lot of people don't seem to realize that though. I have seen some pretty horrible colors and patterns chosen by otherwise intelligent people.

Here's the best formica advice I can give: choose a pattern and colors that closely approximate granite. Normally, when products try to imitate their more-expensive versions they fall very short. Formica in granite patterns and colors breaks that stereotype. In my last home we had a black speckled formica for our kitchen surfaces, and most of the people thought it was granite until we pointed out to them that it wasn't.

Another piece of formica advice: choose the 'bull-nose' finish for the edges. Bull-nose means the edges of the counters are rounded so there aren't any obvious seams in the formica. This finish was the biggest factor how our counter tops were able to fool people visiting our kitchen. The bull-nose finish will be a little more expensive. It's definitely worth it.

One of the most unfortunate choices I see people make in choosing their kitchen design is taking really expensive granite or solid surface counter tops and putting them on the cheapest, ugliest kitchen cabinets you can imagine. I'll put it to you straight, no matter how expensive your counter tops are, they won't compensate for ugly cabinets.

Ironically the opposite can be true. If you have really classy expensive cabinets, they can make your counters appear more expensive than they actually are. In our last home my wife chose really nice (and expensive) cabinets. Combined with our formica that looked like granite, it turned out fantastic. Every person that ever came into our kitchen complimented my wife on her design choices.

I guess I'm saying the bottom line is if you're going to spend money in the kitchen, spend it on the cabinets.

Serving Wares Are On Their Way

Setting tables have become a skill admired mostly by food lovers. Rich couples hire skilled and talented people to set their tables during parties and receptions. Some designs are amply elaborate, richly elegant and lushly showy but simple parties especially kid's birthday parties should have well-deserved table settings too with brightly colored prints on serve wares. These small pieces are wise enough for use to accentuate the dining tables including bowls, platters and plates. They are humble pieces to add colors and figures to the table for a lovely and mouth watering array of foods alongside.

There are a few reminders to be mindful of when setting the table for any meal, whether it is a meal on special occasions during holidays or an ordinary meal. A table that is properly set is always a marvelous start. When table essentials are properly arranged, table manners are also reinforced and it's an excellent way to encourage its practice. Planning and preparation will always be the first things to consider. Jot down all important but sometimes small things and do not forget them. A table is inviting when it is not messy to look at and when it is all set.

Simple but elegant, they can help you make up a sumptuous preparation. They can contain a good number of items to make the display appealing on the table. Cake stands are affordable and do come in size to fit the cake for that celebrant. Cake covers that are transparent show the attractiveness of the cake so that could still fasten your guests' eyes to the centerpiece. Bright colored cake plates are perfect for kid's parties and even stimulating their hunger. Transparent glass cake plates would be suitable for the teenager's party. Dark colored cake stands provide a dainty, elegant look for that small and simple gathering.

Serving platters on the other hand come in so many shapes. They can add humor to the table. They have different small art prints to make it even more eye catching. This including flowers, leaves, faces, hearts and other interesting figures. Like serving bowls which are also designed with drawings, the art on them resembles a hobby or an interest of the artist. It may need a little craft in the decision making process as to which one would suit the table and the celebration but this one is easy especially for moms who are mostly adept to food preparation. Creativity always provides an answer when the need arises and the cheerful and happy disposition that creates when being hosts for small gatherings and parties can always be helpful in the process.

Have you planned just yet when the next gathering is? Or maybe later, you'd be enjoying dinner with your family. Be it an extravagant or ordinary meal, these serving wares will serve good purpose to a table that is properly set. You don't need a special day to use them, use them casually and you will see how each meal will be a wonderful way to have the family seated around the table.

Reap The Benefits Of Proper Lighting

Genesis mentioned that when God created light, he saw that it was good and that he separated it from darkness; it was called Day. That same light was created in the great extent of the sky and was established to signal days, months, years and seasons. Light was fully made use of as you can see it today. In fact, there are light designers who play around lighting in order to get the best results from what is something raw and common. You may look around in your house to check its light and lighting. Ask yourself, "Have I made use of proper lighting in the house to accentuate the fixtures?" or "Is proper lighting conducive for one room to another partition in the house?" or "What proper lighting will be needed around a particular room in the house to make people feel at ease or cozy?"

If you have asked these questions to yourself, it maybe time to evaluate based on the following proper lighting benefits.

True, people feel cozy and warm in places where there is proper lighting. Several studies have proven that. In rooms with huge spaces, high ceilings and bland walls, lighting have created an immense feel of comfort that they have decided to linger longer. It makes it inviting, pleasant and homelike. You definitely want your guests to feel that way so that they will have a pleasurable experience in your house whenever you host a party, a get together or even just dinner perhaps.

Lighting fixtures have reasonable prices too. Sometimes, a single room like your kid's bedroom may just need a single stand lamp to induce comfort. Lighting is flexible and allows one to be creative. It can substitute or complement the room's interior design in addition to carpets, area rugs or wall frames.

Proper lighting is imperative to rooms where there is more to than just the style and design. A study room needs lighting conducive for studying and reading. A kitchen will need the necessary lighting to achieve what is aimed at. The living room needs illumination just enough to create the drama interestingly. There are various reasons why a place in your house should be lighted in particular. An atmosphere that is especially fitting and compatible is an important objective that the role of lighting can assume.

Lighting also reveals the owners' personality and style. It is not only achieved through the choice of furniture, colors and fixtures; lighting also reveals the same important sense of individuality and ownership.

Any activities in the house or in a function room can be dictated by lighting. The more that the room is illuminated, the more that people are inspired to walk around the place and set in motion. If you want to draw in more people in the center, a brighter lighting should be in place to move them towards the light. In your very own house, people can have an early morning kick-off when lights are bright and lively.

Set the mood in your very own place, take control and manage it. These simple and inexpensive devices will help you handle that!

How To Organize Your Kid's Closet So They Can Find Things Themselves

Children thrive on order, but are often unable to create it for themselves. Most children are not good at organizing their closets and rooms. For this task, they need some help. Often, they need a lot of help, in fact. It is up to parents to step in and provide a plan to make the child's closet easy for the child to understand and to use.

The first thing you need to consider is the age of the child. A four-year-old will have a much different closet arrangement than a nine-year-old, for example. Different aged children have various abilities such as using hangers, reading labels, and reaching tall bars. You need to think about what you are expecting your child to do in keeping the closet tidy.

A closet for a four-year-old might have bins for toys. You could label the bins for different kinds of toys, but the child may have trouble reading some of the labels. If that is the case, you can always use labels that are pictures cut out of a catalog or magazine. A picture of blocks could be put on a bin for building blocks. Just affix the label to the bin, and explain to the child that they should look and then sort.

Another consideration for a four-year-old would be that he or she cannot reach a high bar. Hangers are also difficult to manage with little hands. Hooks are good for hanging clothes that must be hung. For anything you can put into a drawer, it is great to have shelves or drawers for these items. Then your child will be able to get dressed without help.

A nine-year-old has different needs, yet often still has the need for some help with organization. A child this age can handle putting clothes on hangers and taking them off of them. This child can reach the tall bar to get down clothes. His or her closet will be more like an adult's closet than a four-year-old's, but it will still have to accommodate the child's needs.

Nine-year-olds have different types of playthings than four-year-olds. They may still be interested in Barbie dolls or action figures. They may have collections, such as baseball cards or coins. They will not want these items hidden away or thrown into a bin. Shelves are a good idea for such treasures. Girls this age might have jump ropes or pompoms that can be placed on hooks. Boys might have radio-controlled cars that can be placed on special shelves. Whatever the toy or hobby, there should be a place to store it.

Once you set up your child's closet so that it suits his or her needs, the next step is to teach the best way to use it. Go through putting clothing and toys away every day for awhile, especially with the little ones. Then ease back into helping your child tidy up the closet once a week. You will find that there are many fewer arguments about a messy room if you take time to help your child organize the closet.

Buying Power Intensifies With Furniture Club Memberships

There is a considerable amount of buying power that forms when people group together to find savings on a variety of items that will be used in the home. Through furniture club memberships, consumers have gained considerable savings on all styles of furniture and they now have marvelous decorations in their home that would not have been possible without the furniture club membership.

Some consumers are interested in a specific type of furniture for their home or office. The furniture club has buyers who travel the world looking for bargain pricing in furniture and will spend a considerable amount of time going through all selections that a furniture maker has before making a final decision on the quantity of each style that they want to buy.

The buying power intensifies with furniture club memberships because these large purchases will eventually give furniture club members great quantities of fine furniture to pick from and all of those selections will be offered at a great price. The selections of furniture will range from rugs and lamps to occasional tables and dining room tables. The selections of furniture are unlimited because the furniture buyers select furniture pieces for use in any room in the home.

Some club members might only need an accent chair with a specific fabric color. Some furniture stores in town might have only a few colors in stock but with the buying power of furniture club memberships, people can now ask to see fabric swatch samples before they make a final choice on which color they want on the fabric for the chair that will soon adorn a living room setting in the home.

Furniture club members will love the wide selection of leather furniture at their disposal and will usually look at leather recliners first. The leather sectionals are sure to grab the attention of some shoppers because these furniture pieces are offered at tremendous savings because of the purchasing power found through club memberships. The buying power intensifies as bargain hunters realize that they could furnish the entire house from the furniture selections the furniture buyers chose.

Through many furniture club memberships homeowners feel empowered when they realize that the prices for the furniture they select will often include shipping and handling. The furniture buyer will consider many more furniture items for the home when they are freed of the worry that shipping might be too much for the large pieces of furniture that they want in the home. The furniture selections might extend to bar furniture or art and wall decorations before they are through because the power of the furniture club membership is really coming through to these savvy shoppers.

You Can Use Shaman Drums For Chic Rustic Decorating

Looking for an easy way to give your home decor southwestern or rustic flare? Try using Shaman drums along with your rustic home furnishings like I did. My love for these beautiful, American Indian drums began right after my husband and I bought our new home last year. We knew that because of our love for the southwest, we wanted true southwestern and Native American style home decor with unique rustic home furnishings. Once that was decided I started filling my new home with awe-inspiring southwestern and country pieces that would match my rustic decor and entertain my guests by telling a story at the same time. That is when I came across how easy it was to give my home that chic southwest style that you see in designer home magazines, by decorating with shaman drums.

Maybe you are like me when I first began digging into the history and meaning of Native American drums, and have only a vague idea of what the Shamans drum is. Or, maybe you are wondering how to purchase the right drum to use in your Shaman drum circle. Whatever the case, it is important to understand the significance this raw hide drum plays in Native American culture so you can develop a true appreciation for its art and let its power influence you in the right direction.

If you are fortuneate enough to attend or be involved in a Shamanic ceremony you will notice that the Shaman, or spiritual leader, will beat a unique looking raw hide hand drum with a soft mallet to create the soothing monotonous beat used to take him to an altered mental state. During this altered state of mind, called the Shamanic journey, the Shaman receives healing and spiritual powers he uses to guide his people. If you look closely at the Shaman's drum you will realize that unlike many other leather Native American drums used during tribal ceremonies, these rustic drums have natural raw hide, stretched over a wood frame on one side and are laced with raw hide string on the other side. They don't have the loop hold like many other Indian drums do. A drum fashioned in this way allows for a natural hand holding position so you can fully control the drum and easily create the sound that is very important in bringing out the right tones necessary to guide you on your Shamanic journey.

You will also notice that many Shamans drums have paintings and symbols on the rawhide playing surface. These unique western symbols often depict a map of the universe or symbols of spiritual powers you can use to lead you in your spiritual journeying experience. If you are using the drum for Shamanic work, take time to look into the significance behind the painting. Since the southwestern symbols have spiritual power that directs the journey, you want to make sure it is in line with your own practices and influences you in that direction.

Also, I like to check the quality of the drum before buying. It's critical to check that there are no thin places at the points where the cords of the drumhead are attached. This is vital to the quality and life of your Shaman drum and will ultimately save you money by not having to have it repaired or buy a new one.

A lot of focus is placed on the drum alone but don't forget to choose the right striking mallet so you can enjoy the rich sound of these native drums to its fullest. You will see that there are many different types of mallets that pull out different tones from the drum and although I personally like using a mallet with a fur covered head, it is a matter of what you like best. Whether you are buying Native American musical instruments such as drums to add to your home decor or are using it to guide you in your spiritual journey, you will definitely be mesmerized by the true Native American style and southwest charm brought to your life and home by Shaman drums.

Tips on Finishing Your Painting and Cleaning Up Afterwards

Painting can be pretty exhausting and can seem never ending. However it does come to an end and when it does you need to be clean and tidy up after you.

After you've finished painting you need to give the paint some time to dry properly. When it's dry, give it a good looking over. There may be patches where you haven't painted such as in the corners or around the edges. When you find missed areas make sure you touch them up with some paint. You'll also want to do this before you remove any masking tape or paper you have laid down. Even although the new paint is the same color as the old layer it's still important to make sure it's completely painted. This is because paints change shade over time; they start to fade.

Once you've done the above, you can now remove the masking. Have another look to ensure there are no blotches or streaks. If you strive for quality, make sure you deal with these issues.

If any of your paint edges are a bit wobbly or they overlap go over these areas again with a good steady hand. There might be areas which you feel need some sanding as well. If paint has any bubbles you should sand and re-paint.

Tips on Cleaning Yourself and Your Brushes

You'll probably feel tired and drained after all that hard work but you're day hasn't finished there. You need to clean up after yourself.

Latex Paints: These are easy to clean up with just some soap and water. It doesn't take long.

Oil-based and Alkyd Paints: These are rather more tricky to clean up. If you get paint on your hair or skin you either have to wait for it to rub off or you could help prevent this happening in the first place. Wear gloves, mask, overalls and head covering. Afterwards you can discard of them or keep them for later.

If you don't have any protective clothing to wear you can always try covering your skin with oil or body lotion. This will make it more difficult for paint to stick to your skin.

For removing excess oil or alkyd paints you'll want to use a good solvent. Make sure you wear gloves whilst doing this to protect your skin. You'll also want to make sure the room you're in is well ventilated, or better still, go outside. If you really don't like cleaning up you could always throw your brushes and rollers away. But this could prove an expensive choice.

Bonsai Care Requires Attention to Detail

The pleasurable experience off Bonsai gardening is gaining in popularity increasing numbers of people in all ages and cultures are experimenting and learning the art. Once practiced by only the elite class of royalty, bonsai are now easily affordable on nearly any budget. But proper bonsai care does entail considerable planning and patience. If you want to create your own bonsai garden, then it is important you understand that bonsai care is a time consuming art and patience is required to slowly produce the wonderful little work of art that you will envision. Bonsai gardening is not ideally suited to anyone who spends much of his or her time away from home. Your Bonsai tree will require constant care.

Bonsai Care Basics

There are four main elements of bonsai care that you should fully understand before you decide whether or not to purchase your first bonsai tree. Your bonsai tree will require constant monitoring of the moisture in the soil. A bonsai tree will not tolerate dry soil conditions. There must be moisture at the root level at all times or the fine root structure will die quickly. Proper bonsai care entails watering your tree at frequent intervals that will be determined by environmental conditions. You must not allow the roots to become dry and brittle or the tree will quickly wither and returning your Bonsai to health will be very difficult.

Another important fact that you need to know about bonsai care is that your tree will require regular feeding. A liquid fertilizer, the physical elements balanced especially for bonsai trees is highly recommended. The solution should be diluted with water rather than applying at full strength. You can purchase fertilizer that is specially made for bonsai care at nearly any home and garden center or one of the many online gardening stores dedicated to bonsai care.

It may seem obvious to some but not understood by others, your new bonsai tree is just that. It is in fact a tree and not your ordinary house plant. You may wonder about the significance of that small difference. Being a tree, your bonsai will require a dormant period each year. This will occur naturally for those who keep their trees outside in a bonsai garden. For those who grow their bonsai indoors, you will need to be sure to give your tree a cool and dark place to complete the normal life cycle of a typical tree. That should occur over a period of a few months during the winter.

An essential but pleasurable element of bonsai care is the pruning. In order for your new tree to grow into the work of art that you have envisioned, you will need to prune your bonsai on a regular basis. Even if you have purchased a bonsai from a home and garden center that has previously been trained to a shape, you will still need to regularly trim off the new growth in order to maintain the desired shape. If you creating your own shape from a young tree, you will need to prune it regularly until it is growing takes the shape you are looking for. After that shape has been established simply trim on a regular basis to manage the new growth.

Bonsai care can be very time consuming, but it can also be very rewarding.

The Basics to Healthy Houseplants

Maintaining Healthy houseplants is not extremely difficult and in fact many houseplants will provide you with big returns on a very small investment. In fact sometimes a little too much care is applied yielding negative results. Plants have developed naturally to survive under inherently poor conditions and sometimes too much of a good thing is in fact not good. Keep it simple but provide the basics.

What Are a Plant's Basic Needs?

Similar to any living thing, a plant needs water, food, environment and occasional grooming. That is basically the program in a nutshell. Learn how to best satisfy these needs for your particular plant and by routinely satisfying those basic needs you should be rewarded with healthy plants.

Potting and soil mix: To permit adequate drainage, it is recommended that you grow houseplants in either clay or plastic pots with drainage holes.

You can place the growing pots inside attractive outer pots but do not let extra water accumulate in the bottom.

Most houseplants do not require frequent transplanting. Transplant when you see the plant being forced out of its container or you see roots showing at the drainage hole. Use houseplant potting mix, and replant into a container that is just a little larger than the roots.

Light: Flowering houseplants and those with colored leaves need more light than green-leafed plants. These houseplants may require supplemental plant lighting supplied by either a specialty grow light or a common flourescent light.

Water: Over watering is the most common mistake of new gardeners. Wait for the soil to become almost dry, but do not allow the plant to become wilted. Water until the water just begins to appear at the drainage holes. Test for moisture by touch or by using a moisture meter every five days. If it feels dry or meter registers dry, it is time to add water.

When watering your houseplants look at the top and underside of leaves. If you see bugs, try washing them away with water and a mild dish detergent solution. Test the water and soap mixture on a small part of the plant first, to be sure there will be no damage to leaves. If you find that is not successful, you will need to apply a chemical insecticide.

Throw away dead plant matter and discard the soil to prevent diseases spreading to your other houseplants.

Humidity: Place a layer of marbles in bottom of saucers; fill with water and place plant pot on top to capture evaporation. Consider a room humidifier if you notice your house humidity levels are to low for your houseplants.

Temperature: Daytime temperatures of 64 to 73F (18 to 23C) and a little cooler at night are ideal. Avoid placing houseplants near heating ducts or drafty areas.

Fertilizing: A great deal of fertilizing is not necessary. Fertilizing of houseplants should be further reduced during slowed winter growth. Begin fertilizing about February with all-purpose fertilizer diluted to half strength. All-purpose fertilizer has nutrient ratios that are balanced or in equal concentrations, e.g. 15-15-15 or 20-20-20.

Trimming

Remove leaves that turn off color or yellow yellow and dead leaves. If more than half the leaf is affected, remove the entire leaf. If only a small portion of the leaf is discolored, trim that portion to the natural shape of the leaf. Use sharp scissors for best results. The leaves of some houseplants may continue to grow at the leaf base. Remove both the flower and the stem. Remove faded and discoloured flowers.

Pests and Diseases: Healthy houseplants are less susceptible to disease and less than ideal conditions. For the best success, only purchase healthy vibrant plants. Plants purchased at reduced prices are have often deteriorated badly and will require a lot of care to return them to health.

Grooming: Dust plant leaves on a regular basis to keep breathing pores open. Remove dead or dying leaves and flowers. Dust and dirt that collects on plant leaves will act as a filter to the ambient light. A clean plant converts energy from the sun more efficiently for photosynthesis to produce food. Cleaning also keeps leaves free of insects and diseases. When you wipe leaves, you often wipe away unwanted pests as well.

Use a feather duster to remove light dust. Dampen paper towels, cloths or sponges with water to wipe leaf surfaces. Carefully wipe both upper and lower surfaces of the leaf at the same time. Although they provide a nice appearance, leaf shine products tend to inhibit leaf transpiration and are not recommended for good houseplant health.

That basically concludes the practices required to maintain nice healthy plants inside your house. The principles are not difficult to apply. Simply develop a routine and follow it.

Kitchen Remodeling Design Ideas and Considerations

When considering the different aspects of kitchen remodeling design, you should be open to all the different ideas for planning and remodeling this area. Therefore, it is wise to make a list of the areas and items that you do not like about the existing kitchen while planning a kitchen remodel design.

Here are examples of kitchen remodeling design issues to address:

* Determine a kitchen remodel design budget, and then stick to it.

* What is the size of your family or number of people you plan to accommodate while entertaining?

* What is the number of cooks who will be using the same space?

* Consider the amount of preparation and counter space you need.

* Determine whether you have enough storage space.

* What about the replacement of some or all of your appliances?

* Consider the type of lighting you plan to use for most areas of your kitchen, whether it is natural or artificial.

* Consider the traffic flow and the work triangle, which is the most efficient distance between the oven, sink and refrigerator.

* You might consider adding or designing a kitchen island for storage, cleaning area and cook top or food preparation area.

* A kitchen remodeling design takes time and planning, so consider the type of pantry and cabinets you want and the types of materials used for the floors, countertops and backsplash.

Do you know that there are homeowners who do not cook but have a beautiful kitchen show place? Some families do a great deal of entertaining in this area that is the center of their homes. It may also function as their office, an after school work shop for homework as well as a place to cook and entertain family and friends.

Kitchen remodel designs today are more complex and expensive. The appearance of your kitchen can add to the value of your home or take away from it. However, this does not mean you have to spend $80,000 to create a beautiful and functional kitchen. When you live in an area that does not feature high-tech kitchens with large food preparation areas as well as expensive materials and finishes, it may not be wise to invest so much money on a kitchen remodeling design, since if you do sell your home, you may not get back your investment.

Most homes today feature an open plan design kitchen that provides good natural lighting. This way you, your family and friends can eat, drink, talk, watch television while preparing meals and enjoying the same open space. The most successful kitchen remodeling designs take into account various designing tips.

You do not have to spend an outrageous amount of money for a basic kitchen remodel design. For instance, when your cabinets are in good condition, you may consider staining or repainting them for a fresh appearance. It the cabinet boxes are in good shape, you might want to replace only the doors, the drawer fronts and hardware.

However, if the cabinets need replacing, there are many attractive, reasonably priced materials that can offer the special appearance you wish to create. Keep in mind that it can become very expensive when you remodel large rooms with custom cabinets made of exotic woods.

Your appliances should be energy efficient and of good quality. However, if you do not want to spend a lot of money, you can choose appliances that are all white, black or beige since they are both less expensive and just as attractive as stainless steel. Remember, a purchase of professional or commercial appliances of stainless steel will increase your budget total once you have determined the amount you want to spend per appliance and whether your existing appliances are reusable.

Always being mindful of your budget, you should know that hardwood flooring is more expensive than some tile or vinyl flooring. As long as you do not use such materials as stone, marble, granite, concrete and stainless steel, keep in mind that back splashes and countertops of more common materials will be cheaper. Rather than using imported or hand painted tiles which are expensive, choose the other types of budget friendly synthetic tiles that are both durable and beautiful.

Kitchen islands are wonderful sources for extra storage and preparation areas, with or without a sink, or you may consider installing a cook top. Consider what the available space will be, since a kitchen island does need a certain amount of space to be work efficient. For instance, when working with a small 3' x 6' island, you will require at least 130 square feet of floor space for the traffic flow around the island to function well, depending upon the size of the room.

No matter how simple or complex your kitchen remodeling design is, the kitchen can be useful for working on the computer, doing homework or gathering around your family and friends for eating and drinking.

Before beginning to do any work, it is a good idea to learn as much as you can about kitchen remodel design. Since the kitchen is the heart of any home and a special area, you want yours to perform its best for you now and in the future.

How You Need To Organize Your Closet System to Fit Your Wardrobe Today

Perhaps your old closet system was perfectly fine when you first started using it. It may have had all the necessary equipment to store all your things. However, anyone's wardrobe tends to change over time; sometimes drastically. When that happens, your closet may no longer suit your needs. Then it is time to make some changes in your closet.

Before you rush out and start buying new storage devices, it is always good to take note of what you already have. Look objectively at the closet space as it sits with all your clothing in it. You need to ask yourself a few questions.

1. Is there enough room for dresses and other long garments?

2. Are there plenty of double hanging bars for shorter items of clothing?

3. Is there a place to put sweaters that cannot be hung?

4. Is there anyplace to hang things you use everyday, such as robes?

5. Do you have a place for accessories?

6. What are your accommodations for shoes?

7. Are there items that should be in the closet that you do not have a space for in there?

When you have determined the pluses and minuses of your present closet system, you will be ready to begin to do an overhaul. You can go a long way by sitting down with graph paper and sketching your closet as you wish it to be. Keep in mind all the answers to the questions you have considered.

If you have been getting by with one tall bar for all your hanging clothing, you will find that putting in double hanging bars will increase the amount of space in your closet. This is because all your short clothing will be stacked double height. It will not be harm or wrinkle the clothes because there is ample room between the bars.

You can still have room for your long hanging clothing if you leave some of the space in your closet with a single bar. To determine how much room you need, hang all your long things together loosely with room to spare for future purchases. Then measure, and you will know how much to leave in a single bar.

If you do not have any shelves in your closet, it is a good time to buy them when you redo your closet. Do not make the mistake of piling them up with household odds and ends, though. Use them for items that you cannot hang, but want to keep in your closet. A good arrangement is to have box shelves that will hold several garments each.

Put hooks in for robes or ties. Accessories such as jewelry or scarves can be put into baskets. There are a number of shoe storage options that you can find at any home improvement store. Just make sure you have included all the clothing you want in your new closet design.

If you put some time and thought into organizing your closet, you will have more room for your things. Your clothing will be more convenient to you. Most of all, you can think about it once, and it will work for you for years to come.

Why There's More to Hydroponics Than Growing Marijuana

When people think of growing plants using the hydroponic system they think of marijuana. However this is very unfair. It's been used to grow plants for centuries; as far back as the gardens of Babylonia actually. There are a huge range of plants that can be grown using this technique.

Basically it's a technique used to grow plants in soil-less conditions. Let's say you want to grow pumpkins, you would grown them in a substrate other than soil. Then you'd feed them with a liquid feeder. The benefits of using this technique are that it reduces disease and pest problems and produces larger, healthier plants.

Benefits of Hydroponic Growing

Weather: The problem with growing outdoors is that you have no control over the weather. Too much rain or heat can spell disaster. Luckily with hydroponics you don't have this problem which is one of the reasons it's so popular with private and commercial growers alike.

Pests and Diseases: Soil can contain unwanted organisms which can badly affect your produce. With hydroponics you don't have this problem because it is much cleaner. This results in a bigger, healthier crop which produces a higher yield for you. Also there's not the hassle of weeding.

Eco Friendly: Because less water is used, diseases, pests and weeds are less of a problem. This means you don't have to use environmentally unfriendly pesticides and herbicides.

How to Start Growing Hydroponics

Do as much research as you can before you rush out and buy any equipment. It may seem pretty simple but there is a great deal to learn. You have to consider growing mediums and nutrient systems. Plus of course that actual system to use.

If you are inexperienced with hydroponics your best bet is to buy a starter kit. They are designed for people like you and everything is there ready to go.

Although there are many systems available, the most popular is the Ebb and Flow type. It's easy to use and maintain and is used by both beginners and advance growers. Described by its name, the Ebb and Flow system does just that. The plants grow in their medium whilst the other container contains water and a nutrient solution. Every so often the liquids flood the plant roots and substrate causing the roots to absorb the water mixture. As the water recedes back to its container, the roots are exposed to air.

Selecting the most appropriate substrate is essential because they all have different properties. Rockwool, perlite, gravel and sand are to name a few. They all absorb water at different rates so you need to match the substrate to what you want to grow.

What to Grow

You can grow pretty much anything including, vegetables, herbs and houseplants. It's a great way to enjoy such produce at anytime of year; even if it isn't technically in season.

When you decide on a crop to grow you will need to research what growing conditions are best, such as nutrients, light and temperature. There are some terrestrial plants that will do better than others. You will also learn a lot just by giving it a go to see what works.

Organize Your Closet Before Going Shopping For The Best Results

People often go shopping not knowing exactly what they want. They browse the racks and shelves at their favorite stores and buy the first article of clothing that strikes them. They may go home and realize that they have an item nearly like the one they have bought. They may find that the item they have bought does not go with anything in their closet. If they had consulted their organized closet first, they would have known.

The first step to making a shopping trip productive is organizing your closet. You will not have to do this frequently as long as you come up with a good arrangement. As you are organizing, put all like items together. Black pants go with black pants, and formal dresses go with formal dresses. Be sure that you can see all your clothes and accessories easily.

Next, go through the organized closet and take out any items that are worn out. A frayed shirt or a pair of jeans with a hole in an embarrassing place could be taken out and put on your bed or a chair. Since your closet is now arranged neatly, it should be easy to weed these sad garments out from the good ones.

Now, look through the closet for clothing that has gone completely out of style. If it has been a long time since you have done this, you may have many clothing items to add to the stack. Anything that you would not want to be seen in goes. You can give them to charitable organizations, where they can be sold or used for their fabric.

When you have your pile of clothing that you will not ever wear again, start making a list. For every item, put down what the item is and with what you want to replace it. For your ripped jeans, you can put on your list the type of jeans you want to buy. If it is a dress that is too dated, jot down the kind of dress you would rather have.

At this point, you can go back to your closet and take another look. You may have one bar that has many items that are almost identical. You may have a dozen white shirts and no colorful ones. You could write this on your list as something you need to invest in. You may realize that you have no clothing that would be appropriate for a formal affair. This could go on your list, too.

Organize your list so that the things you need to get the soonest are on the top. You may be able to do your shopping all at once, but if you have a long list and limited time or funds to devote to it, you may have to make several trips.

When you shop according to your list, you will refill your closet with items that you needed all along. It is only because your closet was disorganized that you didn't know you needed them. Organizing your closet makes shopping productive and satisfying.
